Multiple Icons... but no app

Post by KMTV » 24 May 2021 13:41

Hi, latest issue with FH. Although at the moment I'm trying to establish whether the issue is with FH, Windows, Mac or Parallels.

When attempting to launch the app, the FH icon appears on the dock 10 or more times. The app, however, doesn't actually appear. Consulting the Windows Task Manager shows that the app is in fact running.

The set-up is a late 2008 iMac with Mojave, with Parallels 16 running Windows 10 which in turn is running Family Historian 7.0.5

This is yet another problem to do with an app that I don't use that I am spending my time on fixing rather than doing anything more productive and frankly, I'm less than impressed with the apparent lack of reliability of Family Historian. The fact that it does not run natively on the mac and requires a somewhat complicated method to enable it to be used merely adds to the frustrations!
N.B. I'm not actually a user of any kind of genealogical software!

Bearing in mind that Parallels is a Virtual Machine you are running a full version of Windows so you SHOULD have no issue with running FH. However, a 2008 iMac with Mojave may be your issue as a 2008 is only intended to run with El Capitan not with Mojave. Do you have sufficient ram to be running Parallels, Windows and Family Historian all at the same time alongside Mojave? What version of Windows are you running?

My iMac (late 2015) runs FH v7 fine using VirtualBox as the VM and Windows 10 64bit also running Mojave.

Let me start again - It's not actually my computer so I don't have constant access to it, and I was wrong on a few details.

The Mac OS version is in fact High Sierra, 10.13.16 and it is a late 2009 model with a 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and 12GB RAM

It's running Windows 10

I suspect with a core duo and that much ram without an ssd you will be paging a fair bit to disk and that will impact performance. You may be better off using Crossover rather than Parallels.

The multiple icons issue is very odd.

Have you installed V7 using the administrator install?

It may be an idea to speak to Calico Pie to get permission to do a full uninstall and reinstall of V7 to the same Parallels version. If you are doing nothing else in Parallels it may be worth doing a full reinstall of that and Windows 10 and starting again.

I presume from your post at some stage V7 did work under Parallels properly?
