Templated Sources

Post by santatraugott » 19 May 2021 20:35

I'd like to go on from on Marilyn's post about Generic Sources (19422), if I may, because I am having the same sort of issues. I know what I want the final source citation to look like, but I just can't figure out how to make the essential templates work for me.

Maybe it would make more sense to me if there were filled out examples of each of the templates, taking all the bits of info that e.g., Ancestry includes in their citation, and showing how they plug into the template. Maybe there is such and I am just not finding it?

I selected Essential Templates when asked (I just upgraded to v7) but now I'm wondering if I can change back either to Advanced or Generic. And subquestion: if I do get back to generic, is that where the Ancestral Sources plug-in or addition, comes into play?

I've started a new thread for this because you are asking different questions and I don't want to confuse Marilyn who has been using FH for 10 years. You say you know what you want the Source Citations to look like but don't describe them. Exactly what features are you looking for?

If you have been using FH for a similar length of time then you must seriously consider your options as explained in the FHUG Knowledge Base Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for Upgraders), especially if you have a great many existing 'generic' FH v6 Source Citations. You say you have upgraded to FH v7 (presumably from FH v6) but only joined the FHUG very recently, so it is not clear how long you have been using FH.

It is not advisable to mix Generic Source Citations and Templated (Essential or Advanced) Source Citations in the same Project.

It is not easy to switch between Generic and Essential and Advanced Source Citations.

Ancestral Sources v7 will work perfectly well with Generic or Templated (Essential or Advanced) Source Citations.

Think about what you want to do...
  • Continue with Generic Source Citations compatible with your FH v6 derived Projects.
  • Convert the Generic Source Citations to Templated Source Citations and use Essential or Advanced templates henceforth.
Consider whether you want to regularly import or export your Projects with other products such as Ancestry, that probably understand Generic Source Citations better than Templated Source Citations.

When you have come to a decision we can discuss how to procede.

I will try to come up with a specific example of where I am having trouble, and what I think the ultimate end product of the citation should look like. It may be as simple as, I don't understand what goes where on the template. Is there a section on the forum where the templates are presented with examples?

I have a fair amount of experience with FH 6. I have a lot of experience with sourcing and citing for academic journals, but it doesn't seem to translate well here. And in particular, I did a terrible job of sourcing on the project I just translated from FTM to FH 7, and it all has to be redone. From scratch.

In the end, what I want is probably closer to Essential than Advanced. It's just a matter of knowing where to put the pieces. So I will come up with an example or two.
