Remember where the window was

Post by stewartrb » 24 Apr 2021 12:40

It seems every time I start FH it puts the window in a new spot. Granted, on the left side where I like it, but it's not the size or place where I left it.

Every session I sometimes find myself needing to resize the focus window, and I always have to re-set the position of the main window. I like to work split screen, so the FH window is dragged to the left side and the information window I'm looking is selected as the right side. (I'm working in Windows 10.)

Is there some setting where I can ask FH to remember where it's been placed so next time I start it that's where the windows appear?

If by the window you mean the first main FH window that opens with the Focus Window on the left, then that should always open with the same position and size as you closed it. There are no special settings required.

As a check I just reopened FH by double clicking the FH icon on my desktop.

I'm on a 4K monitor.

The FH window opens 3 1/2" below the top of screen, 2" above the bottom of the screen, and 4 1/2" from the left edge.

I open the Gedcom I want to work with. (Not a project, but a gedcom file directly. I'm using FH as a smart gedcom viewer at the moment.)

The Focus window pops up. I close the Focus window, and then drag the FH to the left edge where it expands to fill the left half of the monitor. (Which is what I want.)

I do my tasks, and then File Exit.

On double clicking the FH icon the window starts where it started last time. Not where it ended. It ended where I wanted it. It started where I have to fix it again.

Are the window settings stored in the project file, perhaps? Since I'm opening a gedcom, which has no project file, or without a project (just the Project Window to pick a project) it opens at some default location?

The size and position are saved in the global Windows Registry settings, not the Project.
It seems that the Snap Left size and position do not get remembered.
So after the Snap Left adjust the size and position slightly before closing and then they are remembered.

I just tried that.

I did the Snap Left, and then (with the right side clear) dragged the window a little wider, and pulled it a little down from the top. I then hit File Exit.

When I open FH again, it appears in the original location again.

I quickly browsed for Calico in the Windows Registry Editor but settings didn't jump out at me.

When I had a similar problem, (all open programmes go top left after PC wakes) it turned out to be an out of date window driver. After checking and updating the driver, everything was back to normal. Worth giving it a try :D

The settings are in:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Calico Pie\Family Historian\
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Calico Pie\Family Historian\

Try adjusting the window a bit more and eventually it should stick.

I updated my video driver.

And I stopped letting Windows "snap" the window into place. I have instead carefully dragged it to where I want it.

And it's staying put and opening like I want it now.

Thanks for the help!
