Merging two or more diagrams

Post by Gary Carson » 22 Apr 2021 19:25

I have created two diagrams using Tools> How Related. I now want to merge these two diagrams into one and connect two individuals with a new connecting line. Can this be done?

Maybe, but not by combining two existing Diagrams.

It depends on how the people in the Diagram(s) are related.
Let me explain what is possible and then you might be able to devise a process.

After using the Tools > How Related... command and creating a Diagram you can choose any two people in that Diagram and use the Tools > How Related... command again and when you choose to Display Graphically select the bottom option Use Current Diagram to colour the relationship on the original Diagram. That process can be repeated as often as you like.

Alternatively, you can open any Diagram or Chart, select any two people and use the Tools > How Related... command as above to repeatedly colour that Diagram.

Thirdly, in any Diagram or Chart, you can use the Family Connection Mapper that lets you choose any two people and colour the connection between them.

Any of the above can be used in combination, but you cannot merge two Diagrams.

If you need more explanation of the above options then please ask.

You have given me the map to get to the result. Will give it a try.

Follow-up Question. Can I select one person in the diagram and then use Tools>How Related to add a new relationship to the existing diagram.

Not if that involves a person who is not already in the Diagram.

That is where starting from a standard Diagram is necessary.
Choose a Diagram that includes all the people you want to connect and close any unwanted branches &/or hide any unwanted boxes, then you can use How Related or the Family Connection Mapper to add coloured connecting lines.

The pairs of people you want to connect must exist in the one Diagram.

After working with the options you provided, I was not able to achieve the result I wanted since I could not get all the persons needed on one diagram.

Selecting one person in the diagram and then using Tools>How Related to add a new relationship to the existing diagram would be a welcome option.

Assuming the two people are related then it should be highly likely you can produce an All Relatives Diagram that includes them both by suitable choice of the Root Couple. Is there a common ancestor or descendant couple?

The first thing to check is that all the people you want to connect are in the same Relationship Pool by running the Search for Orphans standard Query or including Relationship Pool in the Records Window Individuals tab.
