Help with notes

Post by pete56 » 03 Mar 2021 22:00

I might be doing something stupid wrong but half the time I either add or edit a note in FH7 it is not saved. Few times I deleted a note and replaced it with another, then after closing I see the old note is still there. Any suggestions thanks

It is quite rare for FH to lose changes.
Exactly which FH Version are you using? Use Help > About Family Historian that shows the version at the top.

There are many, many Note fields. Which ones are you editing?

When you edit a Note does it open a new window with a 'word-processing' toolbar across the top?
How do you exit from that window?

When you close FH does it ask you to 'Save changes to the Project'?
What answer do you choose?

fix text note

Post by pete56 » 04 Mar 2021 19:09

I have been trying to figure out what I am doing wrong when working with notes. I hve tried to delete several notes and replace them with different notes. Most of the time well like 70% of the time nothing changes. My replaced notes have been returned to the original note. Also I have some notes that were low on the page, after moving these notes back to the top they are still there after reopening. I attach a photo of this problem. Thanks

Pete, I've merged your two postings on Notes as they are closely related.

Your example shows you are editing Place records via Tools > Work with Data > Places.

Could you please answer the other questions I asked yesterday, which might help us help you.

Has this problem existed ever since you installed FH V7 or has it only just started recently?

If you click the [...] bar to the right of the Note box, how does the text appear in the popup Note window?
Is it still shown at the bottom of the box?
How do you move it up to the top?

I wonder if some foreign language setting is causing Note text to be displayed bottom-up?
In Tools > Preferences > Notes tab, click Select... button to show Font dialogue.
What Script is chosen at the bottom?
In Tools > Preferences > International tab what Display, Content & Output Languages have been chosen?

sorry I did not notice yesterday response, my bad. First off yes I am using version 7 with latest update 7.0.2.. Yes it started after I originally upgraded from FH6 to FH7. Yes when I open the … top of screen has the tool bar. When I exit the edit window I click the ok button, there is no save button just okay or cancel. When I exit program it asks to save and if I want to backup. When I click open the edit window the edit I tried to change is not there just the original one, This also happens if I delete the note and replace it with a different note. I looked at the preferences tab and font is Tahoma script is western, display is English usa, output is default. Hope this helps

That all seems Ok but does not explain why you are having problems.

After you have edited a Note what happens if you click the Save button top left or use the File > Save command?
Is there any error message?

If you edit anything else, such as add a Fact, add a Person, etc, do those changes Save correctly as normal?

Presumably, when you close FH and it requests to Save changes ... you click Yes.

What Windows version are you using? 10 or 8.1 or 7 ?
Is there anything unusual about your Windows configuration?

Did you simply install FH V7 on the same PC as you had FH V6 without uninstalling FH V6 or making any other changes?
As you opened each Project it would have said it was converted to FH V7 format.

I've noticed that you have been posting a series of problems since installing FH V7...
Edit Media Note (18880)
RM Place details in FH (18887)
Import from Roots with GEDCOM (18974)
Lat and Long for address? (19022)
However, none of them seems to have been resolved, so are they all still problems?

Wow thanks that was it. I never noticed the save button top left as it not listed to what it is. But after 8 clicked the third button on left a message came up and asked if I want to save. As for the others they were not errors just looking for help in converting my rootsmagic to family historian. I love this program just what I was looking for. I am in a learning curve with it.

I am going to try fh6 on other computer see what happens. I tried on the comp with fh6. No problems at all with saving notes. Everything worked good. I did notice that when I imported the gedcom it asked to check it out fh7 never does this. Also no media files imported from my gedcom from rootsmagic just people.

Sorry I thought I did answer.
I am using ver 7.0.2, windows 10 with latest update. This problem with saving the notes only happens when using this FH7 not with FH6. Yes when I click on the ... it opens with the tool bar on the top as in the picture I posted. To raise the wording I either 1) use backspace button next to first word, 2) highlight the entire note cut and replace where it should be located or 3) delete the entire note and enter the new not. There is no save button at any time that I can see. Nothing appears only when I edit the note. I exit by clicking the okay button. Sometimes the note is saved but not very many times. I have only been working so far with the place notes. I think this covers it. Thanks

This is what I just discovered. If I try and edit the note without pressing the three ... I am able to edit the note and just click the close button. I can lower, raise delete replace all works this way. The problem is when I open to the new window with the tool bars.

OK that is useful.

How are you ensuring that the FH V6 Projects are not upsetting the FH V7 Projects?
Are they each on a separate PC?
I hope you are not synchronising the Projects via OneDrive or Dropbox, etc.

Okay. I have reset my computer and reinstalled FH7. I am unable to save any edit to a note I am working on. I followed the help screen and there it says after I make any changes to the notes I will be asked to save. This does not happen. There is no save button. To exit I click ok but there is no "save". Something is not right. I am unable to properly edit something as simple as a note with FH7. Everything did work good with FH6.

This may have nothing to do with the problem, but I noticed that in the note window posted, it shows "constrained mode".

I was just wondering if maybe that could be preventing the saving of the changes.

There does seem to be a problem with the specific method you are using to add or edit a note for a place record.

If you use the View/Edit Place Details dialogue and open the floating note window to add or edit the note, then click OK to close the note window, the change still shows in the small note field in the edit dialogue. But when you then close that dialogue and re-open it the change has disappeared. This must be a bug and should be reported to Calico Pie.

Meanwhile the work around is to edit the note in the Property box of the Place record (which is what I normally do anyway).

@Bill: Yes, I noticed the 'constrained mode' too. But the odd thing is that after making the edit in the constrained mode window it does show up in the note field of the Edit dialogue, and is indistinguishable from an edit made directly in that field without opening the floating window. Yet in one case the edit is preserved and in the other it is not!
