V7 - Why do previously accepted Hints reappear when a new version is installed?

Post by ajc2966 » 27 Feb 2021 23:28

I installed V7. All ok. Then when I migrated to a new laptop, loaded V7, every person had hints reappear that I had already accepted or declined. Why did this happen and how can I prevent it happening again?

That happened because you did not migrate all your customizations and settings from the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie folder and the Windows Registry.
Use the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin as explained in the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide Standard Migration Steps which also apply to FH V7.
If you are sure that you have no custom settings then just migrate your User Credentials as explained in Step 8 using File > Import/Export > Export > User Credentials.

I didn't know I had to do that or how to.
I had made sure that both laptops have the same version and folder from C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie.
I can't find a folder called Windows Registry but do have one called Registration, so should I copy this? I'd backed up and copied files and moved to new laptop.
When I went to follow step 8, and export the file, there was no file on the old laptop.
I think the safest thing for me is to go through the hints again however long it takes.
I think there should be steps for this prior to installing a new version included or at least an opton for newbies like me to follow.
Thanks for your help.

Users are not mind-readers. If the KB article also applies to FH7, it should say so, not leave people guessing.

I’m happy to review and update the KB page if it is not near the top of the original author’s to-do list.

ajc2966:
This problem of migrating from PC to PC has existed ever since the earliest FH versions.
Calico Pie have done nothing to improve matters despite many requests to simplify the process.
You are welcome to raise a report with them via http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php

The Windows Registry is a special customisation area that users should not normally adjust.
No, it is not the Registration folder. However, it does hold the FH User Credentials for 'hints'.

The command File > Import/Export > Export > User Credentials... should ask you to save FH User Credentials.fhcrd in the current Project Public folder.
You must copy that file to the other PC and use File > Import/Export > Import > User Credentials... to select and import it into FH V7. Then you won't need to review the 'hints' again.

BTW: Since you have FH V7 please update your Profile on the right of your postings.
