Recovering Project
How can I recover a project that I was using?
I had been using it and stopped to scan a death certificate to documents so that I could then copy to the person in Family Historian. When I returned to the project it was completely empty. I have no idea what has happened. Can you help please?
thank you,
Joy

Re: Recovering Project
Sorry to hear of that problem. Could you give us a few more clues please.
What do you mean by completely empty?
If you close and reopen FH are any Projects listed in the File > Project Window and does that include your 'empty' Project?
If no Projects are listed, what is the Location setting below? Is that where you expect to keep your Projects?
If your 'empty' Project is listed then...
If you open that 'empty' Project is it still completely 'empty' even if you click the Home button top left.
If you use File > Backup/Restore > Revert to Snapshot is anything listed? (Don't do anything except Close the window.)
Do you have any recent FH Full Project Backup ZIP files?
Do you have any other general PC backups that would include the Family Historian Projects folder?
Are your Projects synchronised with cloud storage such as OneDrive, Google Drive, Dropbox?

Re: Recovering Project
Hi,
Thank you for your response.
3 Projects are listed. The first 2 still have their data. The project I was using now has no records. The Project is still empty even after pressing the Home button.
In Revert to Snapshot there are several files - the last one 20210207A.fhss is dated 6/2/2021.
The last full backup zip file is dated 6/1/2021.
The Projects are synced to OneDrive.

Re: Recovering Project
I have no explanation for how a Project can lose all its records.
Are you really saying that if you check every tab in the Records Window they are all empty?
The GEDCOM file must still exist, otherwise, you could not even open the Project.
Have you simply upset the File Root definition or deleted the associated Individual record?
If all the above draw a blank then try to recover as below.
I assume the Snapshot dated 6/2/2021 is just before the problem arose.
If not then choose the previous Snapshot.
Having selected the Snapshot, click the Revert to Snapshot... button.
That will save the current GEDCOM as a Snapshot and replace it with the chosen Snapshot of the GEDCOM taken on the date selected and hopefully let you get going again.
Otherwise, you will need to use File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup and choose the 6/1/2021 ZIP file.

Re: Recovering Project
Thank you, I have been able to recover my all my records.
My husband's computer lost all of his records as well. He has copied them from my computer as they were still there!
We have no idea how all this could have happened.

Re: Recovering Project
I wonder if it is some phenomenon of FH V7 but I cannot imagine what circumstances might cause it to happen.
Can you please confirm that you both checked the Records Window and found every tab empty.
If so, then I suggest you report the symptoms to Calico Pie via http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php.

Re: Recovering Project
Hi,
We both checked every tab in the Records Window and they were empty.
My husband will explain what happened with his computer where he had not even used Family historian for months.
It may be useful to anyone reading this with the same problem.
I tried to open my wife's project on my computer. FH v6 opened with the message that I should update to v7 which I did. Then retried to open the project but unsuccessful. I did notice that the sample project was there but my own projects were not. I searched my computer but my projects or GED files were nowhere to be found. Fortunately my wife had copies of the 2 projects on her computer so I was able to recover them. It makes me wonder if my projects were deleted either when FH was updated or when Windows 10 was updated since I last used my projects.
My first version of Family Historian was ver. 2 in 2003 but i have never had any problem till now.
Thanks for your help I will notify Calico Pie.

Re: Recovering Project
There seems to have been some confusion with upgrading from FH V6 to FH V7.
This upgrade process must be managed much more carefully than say V5 to V6.
The GEDCOM files and some custom settings for FH V7 are very different and incompatible with FH V6.
A further complication is your two PC and FH Projects are synchronised via OneDrive.
The profile on the right of your postings says FH V7 but you talk about running FH V6.
If one PC was running FH V7 and the other running FH V6 on the same Projects via OneDrive, then that is a recipe for problems.
It would depend on the timing of you both upgrading to FH V7 and which Projects got opened by which FH version.
Opening an FH V6 Project in FH V7 will update it to the new format which will then propagate to other PC via OneDrive.
If that FH V7 Project is then opened in FH V6 it should say it is a later incompatible Project.
Without a detailed diary of the exact sequence of events it may be difficult for the symptoms you experienced to be recreated.

Re: Recovering Project
I had a similar problem today - loosing the complete contents of my FH7 database - but have recovered .
I am using a standard Windows 11 environment with OneDrive and the latest version of FH7 on a database that I work on on most days. My laptop froze during the real time Updating OneDrive which I suspect was caused by something within the network here in our retirement village. Eventually I restarted my laptop and FH7 showed an Error dialogue indicating the file had no trailer record and something about records showing Excluded . . . but no report or listing or file name. The database was totally empty, Records Window etc. It was listed in the Project Window but empty.
After recovering from the immediate nausea and consulting FHUG, I found this thread and recovered the database by Revert to Snapshot. All I lost was a couple of hours work of loading new data, from a newly met second cousin, which was easily redone.
I see this as a reminder to take personal responsibility for the backing up of my valuable asset and not rely on the bells and whistles within my technology environment for when they don't all sing the right tune together at the right time.
Thanks Calico Pie for the strong security and backup facilities and to Mike and the FHUG Community for their knowledge and support to us mortals out here in the ether.
Cheers
Robert
