Problem with media not displaying

Post by leslam » 01 Feb 2021 13:43

Having worked in IT all my life, I usually pride myself on sorting out my problems - but this one has me stumped! I'm sure it's something stupid that I've done, but I need other brains to help me fathom it out please
I've been using FH for more many years and am currently still on 6.2.7. Apologies for any mistakes in posting - I think I've only asked a question once or twice before!

I have used the Sample Project to try to help illustrate the problem. Attached are two pictures:

(a) first shows the FH sample project All tab and Media tab with the media links and pictures showing

(b) shows my All tab and Media tab PLUS the All media (just to prove that the media does actually exist!)

I thought that it was a links problem and I suspect that this is probably problem, because during last year I was running the projects on my external drive so that I could swap between PC and laptop. I *thought* I had been so careful, but obviously not! It seems to have affected all my Projects :(
I've just opened up the External Links dialog and am not quite understanding what I am seeing :? . Why do I have the extra bit to the tree (albeit at same level as Project Data Folder) compared to Sample? I ringed the baptism entry for continuity...

So my questions are:
(1) How do I fix it? It doesn't seem to be just this project
(2) What have I done to cause this issue - so I can avoid doing it again

Thanks for any help you can give

There is nothing wrong with the baptism_announcement_... Media.
It won't show on the Individual record Media tab, because it is linked to the Source record Baptism announcement -... and will only appear on that Source record Media tab.
Note that the blue text identifies Indiviudal records, red text identifies Source records, and pink text identifies Media records.

If you usually link document Media to Source records, which is recommended, then you should have plenty of examples.

If you expand the Birth 5 January 1953 for Ian Stephen MUNRO in a similar way as your Baptism, then you will see the Source record Birth Certificate: Ian Stephen Munro has Media image Birth Certificate Ian Stephen Munro.
That Media image is not on his Media tab, but is on the Source record Media tab.

Work with External File Links
This does exhibit a minor problem.

To explain, the Project Data Folder refers to current Project .fh_data subfolder that contains the Media folder.
That is where it is recommended that Media files should reside in your Windows filing system.

The C:\Users\...\Documents\family history\fh_familes\ entry indicates some Media files are held there outside the Project folder.
Perhaps, when you added some Media you forgot to choose the option to move them into your Project default Media folder.
However, that can easily be corrected if that is what you want.

Thank you Mike, I can see the difference now. I've no idea why I haven't come across it before, but am relieved that it isn't an issue.
I have drilled down the c: branch and there appears to be one file that didn't get a copy made in the Media folder. As usual, when you know what you are looking at, it's easy to understand how it's happened.

Thanks again for your help; I'm glad I decided to do some tidying up before upgrading ;)
