Flagging records to verify

Post by ShakeyCan » 31 Jan 2021 06:24

Hi all,
6 days into my trial of FH7 - so much to it!
I would say that until recent times, I've been more of a collector of family history items. Pretty chaotic and only on the last few years have I really been doing verification of the data by looking at valid or corroborated sources. The idea of source driven data really appeals to me.
I've been using Brother's Keeper since, well, around 2000 or so. I really needed something more and FH7 seems to tick all the boxes and then some. So I've imported by data via GEDCOM and I have plenty of tidying up to do.
What I would like to do is have a flag or marker against all the individual records that let's be know if I have verified the data or not. Right now as I've just imported everything, I'd like everyone marked/tagged/flagged then as I check each record, I know which ones I still have to go. I hope this makes sense. Apologies if I'm using the terminology of FH7 incorrectly.
Any ideas on the best way to achieve this?

Thanks in advance!

A tidier way would be to begin by adding everyone to a named list called, for example to Be Verified. Then, as you work your way through veryfying the individuals, remove them from the list. You could then use the named list as basis for any queries you may need during the verification process.

Ah, that sounds simpler - I like simple.

Thanks Gowermick!

I suspect that when you get into it, you will discover that it is no so much Individuals as Facts that need corroborating.
Once a Fact has been corroborated then it will have a Source Citation and once all the key Facts for an Individual have a Source Citation then that Individual is corroborated.

It is possible to devise a Query that checks all the key Facts of each person are corroborated by a Source Citation.
It would then list all the Individuals with Facts needing corroboration and identify those Facts.
That way you don't needs Flags or Named Lists because the Query is always working on current data.

So the likely key Facts are Birth, Baptism, Marriage, Census (per decade), Death, Burial, and maybe Will or Probate.
You can easily add others later.

There are some similar existing queries in the FHUG Knowledge Base at Indiviudal Queries such as BMD & Census Check and Census - The Missing Years although they need further refinement to provide what I am suggesting.

Cheers Mike.
I suspect you are right. Ensuring I have some type of source for the facts is what I'm after.

OK, so study the FHUG Knowledge Base for An Overview of Queries.
Review the custom Queries that I mentioned yesterday.
Experiment with designing your own custom Query so you understand the basic concepts and terminology.
Then we can discuss the specific Columns tab and Row filter tab expressions that you might need.
e.g.
%INDI.BIRT.SOUR% refers to an Individual Birth event Source Citation that can be tested for its existence.

An additional useful tool, new in V7, is the ability to add flags to individual events, so you can mark for example a birth as Tentative or rejected. These are covered in the FH help

Yes, they can be extremely useful, but just remember to adjust any Fact Flag when you add a corroborating Source.
