Report of all individuals with similar Last Name

Post by peterbel » 29 Jan 2021 14:57

I want to update my Excel Table of Preliminary/Research data with a marker to show that, that individual in already in FH.

I have looked in FH and the Plugin Store, without success, for a report I can run that will:
List all individuals with a similar Last name, i.e. allow wildcards.
Give their key dates, in particular BMD dates.
Export the result to a csv file.

Is there such a thing?
Thanks

It is not clear to me how the report you describe provides the Excel markers you mentioned.

However, you are describing a very specific requirement that is unique to you.
Also, if you want to produce tabulated data in CSV format you need a Query Result Set and NOT a Published Report.

The best I can think of is the Search and Replace plugin in Search Only mode using Lua Pattern Mode that offers wildcards.
The resulting list of records can be placed in a Named List.
Then a Query to list the details you require could be created and the Result Set limited to the Named List records.

Thanks Mike.
I will get Excel to do it first then manually, by side by side comparison of the Tables. Finally adding the markers myself.

I am not familiar with LUA so could you help me with it please?
For example if I wanted to find all the Last Names that are variants of Brown. Say: Browne, Brownne, Brawne, Brown, Broune. (all made up)
What would the Search criteria be? Br%a+

Can anything be done with Soundex codes? These are already built in to the program (v.6.2 at any rate) and might offer a solution.

Looking at my surnames, I see that Anderson and Andrews are coded the same (A536), as are Harcourt and Harker (H626) and Mennill and Meynell (M540), and there will be plenty of other shared codes too, which you might struggle to pick up without a fairly complex wildcard expression.

Interestingly I have two names which I know are variants from the same family (Eeles/Eyles and Heles - it's a Yorkshire thing!) which are coded E420 and H420; with a bit of ingenuity it might be possible to work out a way to find those similar names too.

This is just something that occurred to me on reading the question - working out a query to produce the results would take me a while.

Added in the light of peterbel's latest post:
I haven't checked, but I think all the Brown etc variants given would code as B650, in which case is this a much simpler way of going about it?

As Arthur rightly says, %INDI.NAME:SOUNDEX% provides the same or similar codes for similar Surnames.
So that might be worth pursuing.

See the FHUG Knowledge Base Understanding Lua Patterns for details of patterns.

You are getting close with Br%a+ and would match any name containing Br followed by any upper/lowercase letters.
But it would match forenames such as Brian and Bruce and match a lot more surnames than those like Brown.

The pattern /Br[oa][wu]nn?e?/ would only match surnames because of the / symbols.
It matches all your examples and little else...
[oa] matches o or a
[wu] matches w or u
n?e? match optional n and e

The pattern /Br[oawune]+/ would match Br followed by any combination of oawune in any order.

Thanks.
I will explore both of your suggestions, but having done neither, it will be after reading some of the KB. :? :D

I have started trying to write a Custom Query using Soundex to filter the individuals, it seemed a good thing to learn.
I've downloaded a query that could be a starting point, where should I save it so FH can list it?

See FHUG Knowledge Base An Overview of Queries under Installing a Custom Query.
That article will give you other useful advice too.

I am no expert, but I do this using the fh search binoculars in the main toolbar.

One may need several search runs through the data to find the various spellings or part spellings, so after each run I add the result set to a named list.
If one then runs a query to find everyone on that named list, it gives one the option of exporting the results (and the columns one has put in) it to MSExcel.

One needs to export to Excel if one wants to calculate things such as percentages or find the average age at death.

I too have a problem with similar names especially German names some of which are accented in German records or use an extra e to indicate the accent, but lose both the accent and the e if they emigrated to USA or UK. Löwenstein, Lowentstein, Loewenstein.

Progressing well with a Soundex Custom Query, thanks for the suggestion.
Is there a way to display the Soundex values of Individuals in FH?

Where?
You are already displaying them in FH in a Query, so just use the same data reference wherever you want it displayed.

I wanted to see what FH has recorded as Soundex codes for other Individuals.
Or to put it another way, are the codes visible in FH without running a query?

FH does not save Soundex codes anywhere. It computes them whenever %INDI.NAME:SOUNDEX% is invoked.
So I will ask again ~ where in FH do you want to see them?
Property Box, Records Window, Reports, Diagrams, you name it...

I seem to be having trouble today to persuade users to explain enough details to answer their questions.

I think my question was clearly put, twice.
Not knowing that they were created on the fly but seeing them as a Column choice in a query plus seeing them in the result set, led me to believe they were stored data.
The ideal place to see them would be the Individuals Record Window, then I might be able to use their values to add or omit them to my Custom Query.

In the Individuals pane of the Records window, right-click any of the column headers and select Configure Columns. Soundex appears near the top of the list on the left; click the arrow to get it in the list on the right, then use the up/down arrows to adjust its position. Back in the Records window, the column header can be clicked to sort the records by Soundex value.
