* Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
I have been using FH since it was first launched, but as an "oldie" unfortunately I am not very technical aware. I now wish to upgrade from V6 to V7 but have what is probably a very basic question. I have personal settings for the wording that appears in my diagrams. Will these be automatically retained when I upgrade or do I need to do anything to keep these personal settings. Thank you.

All your customisations will be preserved, although some of them might be affected by changes to the underlying format and need to be tweaked. (It depends what you've used). We'll help you here if any tweaks are needed.

Re: Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
You would be wise to take backups of any settings you are particularly keen on preserving, just in case!
There are a number of ways to make backups, so give us an idea of what you want to backup and we can advise.

e.g.
- Use File > Import/Export > Export > Diagram Text Scheme... and choose your precious scheme(s).
- Backup the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ folder of many custom settings including text schemes.
- Run the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin that preserves all the above and more.

Re: Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
HI Mike
Thanks for your help.
I would like to back up my setting for my custom report wording for example %INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL% (=LifeDates2()) is the =Relationship(FileRoot(),%INDI%) of =FileRoot()
and also the wording and settings that appear in my diagrams for example %INDI.NAME:ADORNED_FULL%
I hope that helps. I regularly back up FH throughout the day.
Richard

Re: Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
FH Project Backups do NOT preserve global custom settings and preferences.
They aren't stored in the Project folder, but in C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ folder and Windows Registry and elsewhere.
Since you have several custom settings and others you may have forgotten about (Queries, Fact Types, Columns, etc.) then the most comprehensive solution is to download from the Plugin Store and run the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin.
Do you need any advice on how to do that?
See the FHUG Knowledge Base Family Historian Plugins which has not yet been updated for the new Plugin Store but the concepts are the same.

Re: Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
Thank you so much Mike. I've now downloaded the plug-in and it says installed in FH. Presume I'm safe to backup as normal now and go ahead and upgrade from V6 to V7.

Re: Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
No, just backing up Projects as normal is no different than before and does NOT backup custom settings.
You must run the plugin from Tools > Plugins as explained in the Knowledge Base article to create a backup of settings.
That is your insurance policy.
After you have upgraded to FH V7, first satisfy yourself that your custom settings all still work as expected.
If not, then we will have to review what is the best way to get them working the way you want.
When all working satisfactorily, then run the plugin again as the FH V7 custom settings are different from FH V6.

Re: Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
Hi Mike
I've upgraded successfully with my custom formats carried forward OK. Thanks very much for your kind help with this.
One thing that I immediately notice is slightly different and that's on the Project Window "facts" layout. In V6 when I added a citation note (eg for a Birth date, and had a citation of "GRO Death Index" with an added note to this giving the GRO reference), this note was visibly showing immediately under the citation. In V7, although the note is there, it shows only as a note drop down, but the note is off to the far right hand side and is not immediately fully visible.
I have taken a jpg screen shot of this, but not sure how to link it to this message as it doesn't seem that I can attach a file.
Is it possible to change the layout so that the note appears automatically below the citation.
Best regards Richard

Re: Upgrade to Version 7 ~ Preserving settings
I don't think you mean Project Window as that is reached via the File > Project Window... command.
I imagine you mean the Individual Property Box dialogue that does have a Facts tab.
Yes, the Sources For yellow pane has changed and you must use the Edit Source Citation button at the bottom.
Its icon is a yellow scroll with a pencil. ( It is not possible to change the layout back to the FH V6 format. )
Or you can double-click the Source Citation item near the top.
That lets you edit both the Citation-specific Details you mentioned and also the Source Record itself all in one dialogue.
Notice that there are separate tabs for Text From Source, Notes, and Media.
To attach a .JPG screenshot, use the ATTACHMENTS tab below this forum Post a reply text box and ADD FILES.
BTW: See the FH Help > Family Historian Help > What's New in Family Historian 7?
This new behaviour is under New Citation Window and View Citations for a Source.
But there are many other new features for you to discover...

Mike thank you so much for helping an old duffer out. I'm clearly going to have to play with V7 and get used to the new layouts. I'll read the help items that you suggest.
