Data Entry Assistants - UK Royal Navy Register

Post by Malchal » 16 Jan 2021 16:03

Hi, As an avid user of FH6 since 2016, I have greatly appreciated using Ancestral Sources and will continue to use it. I have a number of ancestors that I have been looking at who were in the Royal Navy and with access to the UK, RN register of Seaman’s Services I can see the different ships they served on and their ‘start & finish dates’, all on one page
It would be lovely to have a template to integrate that information into the seaman’s facts record.
First, am I right that that is something we can now do with FH7?
Second, if that is so, would anyone be prepared to generate one as it is way beyond my ability?
Obviously with thousands of sailors in the navy historically it could well be useful to lots of users.
Or is it too big an ask!
Here is a sample entry for one seaman, with many dates.

Thank you.

Are you asking about:
  • A source template?
  • An autotext template for Text from Source to use with the source template
Both of those should be easy enough for you to create yourself with a little guidance, and then use to create each source you need.

A DEA (Data Entry Assistant) would probably not add any value -- I'm guessing there is one fact (e.g. Military Service) for one seaman linked to the Source, whereas the value of a DEA is to create multiple facts for multiple individuals link to the relevant source.

Hi, Thanks for your reply, I’m not sure which I am asking for, Sorry.

There is one seaman, he served on 15 or so ships. Note of his start & finish of service, height, hair, eyes, complexion, wounds, scars or marks, his trade, and gunnery engagements.

Then for ach ship is listed in his Register Page with a start and finish date for his service on them, the ships book numbers (x2), his Rating on each ship, his GC badge worn on each ship, the period of service (from to), the time on the ship Years + days, his character judged on each ship, if discharged/ Whither & for what cause (RN wording not mine!) and a remarks column.

so there would be say 15 different fact entries which FH would integrate with his marriages, census entries etc.,

Does that help, the attachment showed his page in the register.

Thanks,

A DEA to do that (create the transcription of the source, and create all the facts) is theoretically possible but:
  • It probably won't make it to the top of anyone's to-do list soon
  • I suspect that people will all want to create different facts and in different ways, so it wold be hard to create something that was generally useful
I suggest you look into creating a source template, and an autotext template to replicate the source structure as nearly as possible, and using Automatic Source Citation to create all the facts. Most of the information you've suggested will be needed by the various facts will have to go into the Fact Note anyway because there isn't a standard place to put it.
