Anyone know how to hide the Splash Screen on Startup?
I looked through preferences, but can't see an optionn to turn it off!

There isn't a setting within FH.
You can try the advice here:
How to Turn Off the Splash Screen but I offer no warranties guarantees or assurances!

What’s a splash screen?
When you start FH (and many other apps) it displays an image (for FH this is just the words Family Historian) while it does some startup stuff behind the scenes. If you have a fast PC (and the startup stuff is quick) the image may be displayed longer than you would wish, in which case some people might want to disable it completely.
Usually it isn't a problem, and as disabling it isn't a simple preference within the programme, personally I'd leave it be.

It annoyed me initially, as it's displayed for significantly longer in FH7 than for FH6 on the same PC, but I've learnt to live with it. Disabling it requires additional software, which is something I don't like doing unless it's absolutely necessary.

OK, I'll have to live with it. But one does wonder why it is displayed for quite so long. My FH7 fully loads my 20,000+ tree, and splash screen still displays for another 3 or 4 seconds!

Having programmed these things, I can say that they're often set to display for a fixed time which doesn't depend on the PC or file size, but is aimed at the non-existent 'average'.

Every day's a learning day!
Thanks for the explanation. Today's bit of learning done

Me too, but I was always under the impression that splash was synonymous with flash, i.e a
Quick almost subliminal popup, not a 15+ second popup

Mine is under 5 seconds. There's that non-existent average again...

The duration of the 'Splash' screen appears to be dependent on the startup process used, i.e. for me :
1) If I don't select a default startup database the duration is 1 sec. but I then have to select the project and start it.
2) If I select a default project to be started then the 'splash' remains until everything necessary is loaded into memory - shortly after the green progress bar gets to the end of its journey and the screen refreshes.
So the 'more' the project data the longer the process takes.

I got my timing wrong It was actually on screen for 7-8 seconds, 2-3 seconds longer than it took project to load!
(Just seemed like 10+ seconds

Any updates on this?
Now that I've got a new superfast PC, the wait for the flash screen to disappear before I can begin work is getting annoying.
I want the proerty box to float on opening FH, something it fails to do, so I have to set it to Docked on opening, but then find I can't click the 'float' button until flash screen has finished displaying - aaargh
Has no-one found a register setting to play with, to reduce the time it the splash screen is open?

If you click on the splash screen, or press any key on your keyboard, that will make it close immediately.

... or at least, as soon as it's finished loading your default project.

Simon,
Thanks for that. IPressing a key doesn't close it immediately, but waits until file has loaded - good enough.
All I now need is for property box to float on opening as it is set up to do!

If you want to see how long the splash screen displays for when the application isn't actually doing anything, try clearing your default startup project, and restarting FH. When I do that, the splash screen is displayed for about a second.

Simon,
No thank you. I'd rather have the ability to switch it off altogether
