Source Record Template questions

Could someone help please I'm using a template for the first time in V7 and have some questions that I can't find answered in the copious pages of FH V7 "Help" on this subject.

I'm entering a Death, I have the Certificate. It' a married woman who died in 1883.

Principal 2 - is this used for entering a woman's maiden name. If so is that it's only purpose? If she was married 3x would you suggest I enter her first and second married surnames as well, or is that irrelevant in citation terms?

Date: Presumably this isn't the date of death because I have already entered that. So is it the date the death was registered or the date I'm entering the data in FH7.

Lastly, there is a lot on citations here on FHUG but is there anything written after release of V7 (I'm only talking about Template, not interested in Generic). The v7 Help section contains a huge amount of text but nothing that counts as step by step guidance like the well written help for entering data into an Ancestral Sources template.

Principal2 is only for Marriage certificates (where you need to identify both spouses).

Are you referring to the Date field within the Citation details (which I don't think is visible unless you've customised the template)? If you are, per Gedcom it would be used for the date the information was entered in the original source document (so registration date) but there are also people who use it for the date they entered the info into FH. YOu don't need to repeat the date of death.

We have Sources and Citations in Version 7 (for Upgraders) in the Knowledge Base if it helps. It doesn't include step by step for different source types -- is that what you're looking for?

Helen

Thank you so much. Its becoming a little clearer.

May I ask another please? Ancestral Sources has the day/month date of each census automatically added to it.

There is a white text panel to the right of the Source Template. Is there any easy method of populating the top of this template for a Census with a list of these dates for each census year so that the entry in the property box is consistent with other entries made using Ancestral Sources? The alternative of having a template for each Census year would be a bit clumsy.

There isn't any way to include the complete census date in the Census Source Template, other than to create a template per year, which as you say would be cumbersome.

However, I'm not sure why you'd want to. Censuses are only taken once every few years so the year is sufficient to identify the source (and the Source Template is for holding source-identifying information, not every piece of information in the source.) If you've included the day month and year in the source titles created by AS, and want to remain consistent with that, you'll need a template per year.

If you use the Census (UK) DEA, the facts created will be given the correct day month and year according to the census year you specify.

Hi Peter

Can I ask why you've decided to use FH 7 to enter your census sources rather than Ancestral Sources? For example, AS has full support for templated sources. I believe it also has various other features that make it easier to add census entries (and other source types) in AS (I'm sure FH will catch up one day). Just wondering what features I'm missing.

Thanks

Nick
