adding citations to notes

Post by joe81au » 09 Jan 2021 14:08

Does anyone know of a shortcut to adding a citation to an individual Note.

The citation portion of the Fact pane provides options for copying a citation and then pasting it for use with other facts.

The Copied material sits on a citation clipboard, it would be nice to have a shortcut to insert the citation directly into the notes text. A lot faster than navigating thru the pull down menus.

If I understand what you want to do correctly, then having used the Copy Citation to Source Clipboard button on the Facts tab, open the Main tab, select the Note box and click the Paste Citation from Source Clipboard button.

You can copy & paste Citations like that between any valid fields, not just Facts.

However, bear in mind that in GEDCOM 5.5.1 such Citations on Note fields are not allowed, and FH only allows them as a legacy feature from FH V6 that complied with GEDCOM 5.5. When exported to other products that support GEDCOM 5.5.1 those Citations will typically be moved to the parent item, which in this case is the whole record.

Mike,

That method adds a whole note citation. I was wanting a shortcut to add a footnote in line.

I do realize that the footnote will not export to other products. So I'm getting married to this product. I don't change often, once ca 2000 from an early Mac product to FTM and now.

Its a lot of work to change. But I'm taking this hobby up again after a 15 year gap, so now is the time to move.

Adding footnotes in line is one of the features I have long wanted. Along with the ability to do some text formatting. The GEDCOM std is way out of touch in regards to modern text editing.

Thanks

Ah! You mean equivalent to using the Add Source Citation button in rich text Notes.
Sorry, that appears not to be possible.
