Publishing a Book

Post by peterbel » 04 Jan 2021 17:14

This is my first venture into making a FH book from my data, apologises if some of these questions have been raised before.
1. What is the best way of creating a Descendant's diagram so that it reads well in A4? The one created from the Book & Booklets process needs a bit of tweaking. I was thinking of creating the diagram separately and adding it to the document in Word.
2. I have used Census templates for some individuals and in the book they are too wide and get truncated when placed on an A4 page in portrait. How do I alter the settings to get a fit?
3. Is there a way of editing out the text widows and orphans? Again I thought of using Word.
4. I have an odd font size change six pages into the book and can't see a way to correct it, other than Word. 'John was baptised........'
Thanks and Happy New Year to anyone who may reply :)

  1. Create the Descendants Diagram on its own in the usual way beforehand. Enable the Page Boundaries that will probably be A4 size. Make whatever adjustments are necessary so it fits nicely on a few A4 pages. Then save as an FH Chart.
You can then add that preformatted FH Chart to the Book.
There are also options in the Book dialogues to adjust the Scale and Position on Page of Diagrams and Charts.
  2. That is a problem in FH V7 that has been raised earlier. The only workaround currently is to edit the tables in the Source records Text From Source fields beforehand.
  3. No, I don't think Books or Reports have a widows & orphans option. The snag with using MS Word is it is likely to upset the placement of images in the Book.
  4. That font change looks like it may be associated with the preceding "Find My Past website just has a transcript" that maybe is a blank rich text Note with a small font. It probably should not happen and may be a bug. More details are needed.

Thanks Mike, plenty to work with.
In FH's book editing tools I reduced the scale of the Descendants Diagram to 50% which looked much better, but going back to View it was not fully reproduced, just repeated parts of it.
Saving the book as a RTF file for MS Word seemed to work without a problem but on opening in Word the Descendants Diagram and the following Bibliography and Index sections were completely missing.
Going through the book again I noticed one individual had two images where all others have only one, haven't found the reason for that yet!

I think I will have another go from the beginning, but omitting the Descendants Diagram, and see how it goes. Otherwise I think it might be a cut and paste job using the 'standard' reports.

Like most software products, there is a lot to discover on your first attempt at producing at Book.
Much of it will become more familiar on subsequent attempts.

I suspect the Diagram, after scaling down, was not positioned on the pages tidily.

Your experience with RTF to MS Word is not uncommon.

If a Report has an anomaly such as extra images in the Book, then open the same Report on its own and it should have the same anomaly, which is easier to resolve in a standalone Report.

The thing to remember is the component Diagrams and Reports are only composed from their standalone equivalents.
First, get each standalone version to your liking and then combine them into a Book. Don't try and do it all in the Book editor.
