Research Notes

Post by Baboon281 » 27 Dec 2020 17:44

Having upgraded to V7 some of the new features look very useful in particular the Research Note facility. I have previously used "named lists" to organise my notes of research, the new Note Tab looks much better suited to what I am trying to achieve. Before I jump in and change things I have a few questions.

1.
I can see how to create a Research Note in both the property box (for a specific individual) and within the Research Notes Tab in the "records window". If I create a note in the "Records Window" I can see how to link it to a specific individual, though when I go to that individuals "property box" I cant find the note I created? If I create a Shared Research Note in the individuals Property Box I can link it to a Research Note but then in the "Research Notes" tab in the records window it does not show the specific link I created, only the total number of links for that Research Note. Is there a way to show who the note is linked to in the records window other than via the action View>Record Links, or creating a specific link in the note under the Research Tab in the "Records" Window.

2.
This may be personal preference. If want to create a Record of my research done is it best to create a separate note for each individual via their "Note Tab" in their property box or a single "MASTER" Research Done note in the Research Tab in the Records Window and then link individuals to that. Are there any pro's and con's to either way?

3.
Similarly (there has been a conversation re this before (post 18369, I think)). If I wish to see who I have a 1841 Census / BMD etc for is it best to create a Master List under the Research Tab in the \ Records window for each topic (1841 Census / BMD, etc) and then link specific individuals to that topic (as long as I can figure out how to create and view links as per the question in point 1 above).

I hope the above makes sense as I think I have confused myself a little trying to figure things out.

1. Research notes linked to an individual should show up in the Notes tab of the Property box (with a tick on their icon to show what sort of note they are.).

View > Record Links or a plugin are the only way to see which records are linked to a Research Note from the Records Window.

2. This is personal preference, depending on how you want to work. I intend to create a research note per research task, linked to all the associated individuals (e.g. a research note to "Find Marriage" would be linked to both spouses), and then mark it complete when it is -- I suspect it will be easier than using a single Research done note which will get very difficult to navigate through as it grows.

3. I'd probably use a Query to check for whom I had a census record for a particular year -- it cuts out a manual data entry step. For things you can't query for, I'd use a Named List (see Planning and Tracking Your Research)
