Diagrams

Post by GenealogyPrinters » 24 Dec 2020 13:30

I'm trying to design what I would call a double hourglass tree, by that I mean a diagram for a couple showing them with all of their direct ancestors and their children. What I have done is to create a right to left diagram for the husband which shows the couple and their children. Then I inserted into the diagram an ancestor tree for the wife left to right, moved the wife's tree into position to achieve roughly the desired effect. I then hide the duplicated wife's box on the husbands side of the tree. The problem then is that the 2 different diagrams are at slightly different heights, I use the diagram control box to level up the 2 trees but this leaves the wife out of line with her husband in a higher position.

Is it possible to just move one box up or down on the diagram, I cannot see how to do it using the diagram control box.

Thanks
Ron

I'm finding it difficult to visualise how the wife's ancestor extending to the left fits in with the children also to the left and exactly how the husband and wife boxes are aligned.
It would help if you could post a screenshot as explained in Forum Usage Tips under Attachments.

Why not just use the couple as the diagram root? Select their Family record as the root. (If you don't have the Families tab visible in the Records window, use Tools>Preferences>Records Window and set Families to Always Show.) Then you don't have to insert an extra tree or hide any boxes.

If any adjustments are needed after that, use the Movement Control Box. To move one box relative to others, use the Fixed Point option. Fix one box and drag another away from it. However this often has the effect of moving other parts of the tree at the same time, so it can be a bit of a fiddle until you get used to it.

To select the Family record, click the blue bar running under their boxes in the Focus Window that often holds their Marriage.

Lorna, Ron seems to want the husband and wife ancestors to extend in opposite directions left and right, but I don't see where the children fit in. However, I agree that a Family couple Ancestor & Descendant or an All Relatives Diagram would be easier.

Yes, reading Ron's post again I see that the two sets of ancestors are intended to be on opposite sides. That would work if there is indeed only one generation of descendant (the children, no grandchildren etc) because the children will be in a single column in the middle, between the two parents.

So to return to Ron's question, maybe he wants something like this (but perhaps with extra lines inserted to link the children to the mother):
