I had a bit of confusion with a map location in FH7. One of my ancestors was living in Northowram, Halifax, West Yorkshire, England in the 1891 census. However opening the map window, the marker was placed in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I tried a number of variations to try to locate the marker correctly. Removing Northowram put the marker on Halifax, West Yorkshire. Just typing Northowram, West Yorkshire found no matches. Just typing Northowram gave 2 matches, England, United Kingdom and Boothtown, England, United Kingdom. Both markers were on the correct place. I eventually ended up with Northowram, Yorkshire (omitting West), England which located the marker correctly. Adding Halifax again failed to locate it correctly.

It happens, but there is a simple solution.
With map open on Northowram, just drag the name in left hand column, ( however you’ve entered it) and drop it on the map on the corrcet place.
Not only will it place the marker correctly, it will also update the geocode for you.

I have also found that Yorkshire works better than South Yorkshire, but there are workarounds

Ah! the delights of Yorkshire history and geography and the 'non-existent' geographic areas of North Yorkshire, West Yorkshire, South Yorkshire; and of course the late and unlamented 'Humberside', all of which are/were politically created administrative areas which have very little to do with geography (mapping) or history prior to the 1970s, which was all about the Ridings (North West, and East; and the Ainsty of York). There was no 'South', of course, in Yorkshire. We are proud northerners after all

It's a bit like trying to identify the County boundaries of Middlesex on a current map of England.

Be careful what you say about South Yorkshire as my wife comes from Sheffield

But Mike, that means she's from the West Riding, so she's still a fine Yorkshire Lass, even when in exile

Thanks Gowermick. I've found quite a few more places to relocate now. Should keep me busy for a while.
