FH 7 Add Source from Template

Post by dkbutler13 » 16 Dec 2020 16:33

So I just upgraded to version 7 this morning. I've read information in the knowledge base and help document, and I'm slowing understanding the new Source from Template feature. However, I have a couple of questions.

Currently, when I look at my list of sources, they all have a category listed under Generic Type, such as birth, marriage, death, burial, etc. However, now that I've added a few sources using templates, instead of having a general category, they have listed under Template, things such as microfilm, CD/DVD, online, letter, etc. I like that it includes this information, but I'm missing my more generalized categories. There are times when I just want to look at all the birth records that I have, but I will be unable to do that if the more general category is no longer listed. Is there any way to also include a Generic Type, while still using the Templates?

My second question is regarding the Title and Short Title. I've noticed that when I add use the Templates, that it doesn't give an option for a Short Title different from the regular Title. Am I missing where that could be an option?

I may have missed this while reading about Source from Template, but is there an easy way to convert all my generic sources to Sources from Templates? It will drive me crazy if they don't all match eventually.

Lastly, unrelated to the Source from Template, I just have a general question that isn't a big deal, but has bothered me. I noticed that in the Property Box, the Sources are no longer listed on the right side of the box, but instead at the bottom. Is there a way to move that back to the right side? I like having the sources showing, but I may have to start hiding it, as it takes a lot of space away from the information in the property box without having to scroll down.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

The general answer to your leading questions is probably yes, but may need some adjustment to the Source Templates.
Others will no doubt go into more details of the pros & cons.

Converting old Generic Sources to Templates Sources is far from trivial and users with a massive set of Generic Sources are uncertain about the benefits of converting. See Sample plugin for converting sources to use templates (18347).

To adjust the Sources For pane use the Property Box cog Menu top right Options.
That yellow pane holds a lot less now so can be shrunk and there are scroll bars for the Property Box.
If you keep the floating Citation Window open then the yellow Sources for pane is almost superfluous and just needs to be switched on when its toolbar buttons are needed.

Thanks for your help. Luckily I just started using Family Historian a few months ago, so I only have a couple hundred sources that I'll want to convert.
