Research notes.

I have added some details into the new Research Notes in V7, mainly log details of searches completed.
Is it possible in the Property Box, to have some sort of indication that the individual has a Research Note attached.
I know that going into the View command I can find a list there of all notes, but think it would be helpful if I could see in the Property Box.

You can attach (and review) Research Notes for Individuals via the Notes tab of their Property Box.

I do it a different way, I create a research note for a group of people, say for instance I need to find death events for them, I could call it Search for Deaths, then create a table in the research note and drag each individual that I need to look for into one of the table cells, it creates a hyperlink to the said individual.

The above is only an example, there are so many options available.

Hi Mike, How do I attach a Research Note to the Notes tab in their Property Box.

Dave: Yes, but then it is trickier from each Individual's Property Box to find the 'linked' Research Notes as explained in posting Links to Individuals in notes (18369).

Phil: To add a Research Note click Add Note > Shared Research Note ~ did you not see that?

Hi Mike, yes I know, but I can also add it to a persons note page by adding a shared research note, it depends what I am doing.

I can view it from the notes page of an individual or click on the research note itself and see at a glance, all the people I need to work on.

Which is exactly what Phil was asking to do.

Sorted. I clicked on ADD NOTE, then SHARED RESEARCH NOTE.
Many thanks.

I wonder if there is a way to create a Flag/Expression to produce an Icon on a Diagram to indicate the existence of a Research Note? As I work almost exclusively using Diagrams, that would be so helpful.

Yes, if the Research Note is linked to the Individual record then =Exists( %INDI._RNOT% ) should work.

If the Research Note contains a 'rich text' link to the Individual then I don't think it is currently possible.

Like many of us, I have been experimenting with Research Notes. I am quite impressed with the possibilities they offer. My task is to replace my previous us of "To Do" notes and ideally information I have previously held external to FH.

If I create a new Research Note template I have some questions. Now the standard three Log, Plan and Tasks have five
lines at the top of the text area, e.g.

Title:
Type: Plan
Date:
Description:
Status: open

The text "Type:" actually seems to work as a 'magic tag' to populate the record list which is neat because I can create my own types.

Title, Type, Date and Status appear as headings in the Records View, but not Description. Do we know why? Can it be added?

Yes, the Records Window columns can be configured as usual via Lists > Configure Record Window Columns...
Where the existing column definitions give clues to how they work.
e.g. Type is =GetLabelledText(%_RNOT.TEXT%, "Type:")

So Description will be =GetLabelledText(%_RNOT.TEXT%, "Description:")

Thank you. That's easy I had not paid attention to that option before!

So if I want to add a link to the "Repository :" it works if I just use plain text, but can you adapt it to work if it is a hyperlink, i.e. extracting the text?

Thanks,

Graham

Yes, this works well if there is only one Repository link anywhere in the Research Note
%_RNOT.TEXT._LINK_R>%
or if you want to extract a particular Repository field:
%_RNOT.TEXT._LINK_R>PHON% or %_RNOT.TEXT._LINK_R>NOTE2%

This is a rather old post, but I just ran across it and would like to take advantage of Mike's suggested answer to gsward, but it does not seem to want to cooperate in this case. I will usually create the Research Note in the Notes section of the associated topic and then add an Individual Link inside the note. The screenshot best describes how I using Research Notes:

Chris, the problem is that you are not actually using Research Note records (which are listed in the Research Notes tab of the Records Window and linked directly to the Individual record and listed in the Notes tab of the Property Box).

What you are creating is local Note box text that contains the keyword #Research in the text.

That is why the =Exists( %INDI._RNOT% ) condition does not work as that is looking for a linked Research Note record.

You need to use the =ContainsText( %INDI.NOTE2%, "#Research", STD ) condition which is looking in the local Note box to see if contains the #Research text.

Thanks Mike. That did the trick!
