FH Descendant Report

Post by bdweisel » 14 Dec 2020 02:09

Would it be possible for FH v7 to create a descendant report similar to the former WorldConnect descendant reports on Rootsweb.com? Attached is an example of a WorldConnect (WC) report created before 2017. Ancestry replaced WC in 2019 with a modified, crippled version designed to eliminate any competition.

A FH Narrative Descendant report will list all facts for the person but in one long continuous statement in paragraph format.

A FH Outline Descendant report has the option to list "Events and Attributes" on separate lines. But the only facts listed for a person are birth, marriage, death and burial facts.

What I'd like is a FH Outline Descendant report that could list ALL facts, such as census, immigration, occupation in addition to BMD facts in a bulleted list under the person's name. Is this possible?

thanks, Bonnie

Have you explored the Individual Summary Report (ISR) format? It provides a wonderful, dated chronology of all the factual events in a person's life. Plus, you can enhance the story of each Fact by typing your own text in the Note box for each fact. I use this format exclusively for all my genealogy reports, it avoids having to deal with sentence templates and allows you to tell a person's story in your own words.

Apologies if I am missing your objective, but you might experiment with the ISR to see if you like it.

thanks, for the reply --
-But how can you use this person format in a descendant report?
-And I'll also need to create descendant reports for 5-10 generations. So the format should be functional, efficient, so as to become too lengthy to be useful.

It could be that what you are looking for is the Descendants report which I have relied on in all other software.
An expert on fh (almost certainly Mike) must have written me a custom report. I have it saved as a Custom Report called Journal Descendants Detail .

I have no idea why fh never included one. Nor whether it has been added to fh 7. But I have just looked at fh on my computer and cant see one.

You can modify the Options for the Descendant Outline to include/exclude whatever facts you choose.

Helen, that is fine. But you have no idea how confusing fh seems to new users. And to some old ones like me too.
The whole idea was to stick to gedcom and be a new invention for genealogy software. Which it was.
You would think that after version 7 it would provide replicas of what most people are used to as a standard.
Some researchers like to tailor. Others dont.

Apologies, Evelyn -- I was trying to be helpful to bdweisel, who is a new user, by pointing out how they can achieve what they want.

Expanding on Helen's answer, when you use the Publish > Outline Reports > Descendant Outline command the first popup dialogue box lets you choose the Subject Person root, the number of Generations, and offers More options...

In the Report Options many custom data settings are available on the Main tab:
The Individual/Family Events/Attributes have an All option to include all facts.
The Layout Events and Attributes has on separate lines which produces a bullet point list.
Don't overlook the Help button.

There are many other settings on the other tabs which can be explored via the Options button after the Report is displayed and will dynamically update the Report as they are changed, and automatically get saved against the standard report so it is wise to use Save Report As > Custom Report Type and keep the standard report with default settings.

Thanks for the replies. I used the option to include all facts on the Outline descendant report. While not a substitute for the original WorldConnect reports on worldconnect.rootsweb.com, the FH report is the best substitute I can come up with.

Now if FH was to add that as a special report or plug-in, it would likely attract a few more customers.

FH 7 already has the ability to create custom reports using plugins.

The new Timeline Report is actually quite close in format to the layout you are looking for so if you have the skills you could use it as a base to create a new report using a plugin.

There are a small band of plugin writers here, but they are currently all busy with the V7 upgrades needed, but perhaps revisit this when the V7 flurry has died down.
