Property window and citations

Post by mezentia » 10 Dec 2020 12:14

In V6 when I added a source to an event, I saw details of the citation in the lower half right-hand part of the property box when the Show Source option was selected. I have just added a death entry for an individual. My source is the GRO Death Index Entry. My source is called GRO, and I use the text of the index entry from the General Register Office website as Text from Source in the citation to record the index entry details as it generally covers two lines and is too long for the Where in Source line. (Incidentally, as this is cut and pasted from a web page, this needs now to be pasted as unformatted text, an extra step in recording this information.) In V7 I now only see the source and none of the citation details unless I click on on the Source, then Edit Source Citation, and the select the Text from Source tab. Can I configure the property box to show the actual citation as well as the source?

The citation can't be shown in the Sources For pane in the way it used to. But I have customised the new Citation Window so that there are Text from Source fields and Note fields for both the Source and the Citation on the Main tab of the Citation window. This means you don't have to click through to the Text from Source tab if you are just adding or pasting a short entry. (For details on how to do this see the link Helen gave in her reply)

By the way the view in the Sources for pane attached to the Property Box can be customised slightly. Click the Cog wheel icon in that pane, then Dispay Citation As....

Thank you Helen, Lorna. Shame about all the extra clicks needed, though.

I suspect it's always a balancing act -- I'm ecstatic about the new Source Templates, but they bring changes with them that others don't want...

Mezentia,
I have had a similar situation when upgrading from v6 to v7, and have had to customise my generic source and citation panes to match almost what I had in v6.
I have been using a browser extension ORA (Online Repository Assistant), not free but at $2 per month is worth it, which reads all the available information on a website page and shows it in fields that can either be manually copied with one click, or scripted to automatically update the Source/Citation in FH with all the data, in your own designed template format. I am slowly updating all my ORA scripts to match v7 generic sources. Unfortunately FHv6 and v7 don't have all the mouse clicks and keyboard actions defined as keycodes, but I have managed to get around some of them. For the GRO births or deaths my process is; go to the Facts page of the Indi, place the cursor in the Date field of either the birth or death; in my browser goto the GRO entry for the Indi, and select the 'run script' button in the shown ORA control panel. The script then populates all the fields in the FH fact according to the script. No transcription typing errors! and done in a couple of seconds.
ORA works very well with a lot of the recognised Ancestry, Findmypast, etc. websites, and has really worked for me. No more cutting and pasting for me, and a huge saving on typing!

I tried to use Helen's solution but mine doesn't show the item in the left-hand pane, so I can't move it!

Which item are you looking for? Did you follow the link Helen gave to the Knowledge Base? Did you see the line that says "Click <Custom Item> in the left hand pane"?

I presume you are working through the KB page Customising V7 to use V6 (Simple) Style Sources?

Where exactly in those steps are you having a problem. You know where you are stuck, but we don't unless you tell us.

I am using the cog at the top of the property and citation boxes, I press 'customise property box' and I get individual at top and 2 panes but the left-hand pane doesn't say what Helen said so I can't move it to the RHS?

There are some crossed-wires here  .

The KB article is talking about customising the Source record Property Box and NOT the Individual record.

The best you can do for the Individual Property Box Sources For pane is after opening the floating Citation Window.
Click the Edit Source Citation button at the bottom of the Sources For yellow pane (yellow scroll with a pen icon).

In its cog Menu > Customize Citation Window you can put Text From Source, etc, on the Main tab.

Yes, Mike, that's much better! There are too many cogs and they spoil the broth!
