Help! Can't open FH7!

Post by arishmell » 08 Dec 2020 17:19

I've downloaded the full version of FH7 (I had a CD of FH5 and an upgrade to FH6 but couldn't immediately find the registration numbers to get the discount, and I was impatient)! It downloaded and installed just fine as far as I could tell. I entered the Registration Key which was accepted but now I can't open the program. I've tried with the new desktop shortcut, the TaskBar shortcut and from the Start Menu. Nothing happens apart from the occasional blue spinning circle. I've rebooted the PC (Windows 10) twice and still nothing. I'm being schooled in patience, aren't I! Seriously, what can I do? If I uninstall, will all my data still be there safe?

I wonder if it's struggling to contact the Calico Pie servers to confirm the licence. It sounds as if they've got some issues with too much demand currently - too much demand is a great problem for a small company to have! I would hope that it will all be OK once this current surge reduces.

Take a copy of your projects (although I assume you have a regular backup routine so probably already have a backup?)

Work your way through https://www.family-historian.co.uk/sup ... tall-error to see if any of that helps.

What virus checker do you have installed? Try disabling it temporarily. Most virus checkers will object to very new programmes like FH7.

Yes, my AVAST anti-virus had to check FH V7 was OK.

I don't believe FH V7 goes online with Calco Pie when it starts.
That was something I checked as it would prevent laptops using FH away from Wifi in say a cemetery.

Mike: Are you sure it doesn't do a licence check when you use it for the first time on a new PC? When I first used it it came up as restricted version in the background and there was quite a lengthy delay and then eventually it all loaded up correctly. After that it loads up instantly every time I run it. So I assumed the first time it was doing some licence checks. But I may be wrong of course.

Maybe the first run it does. Did not check that as quite tricky.
I'd assumed it did all the online checks when registering and saved the details in the Registry, but don't really know.

Usually at the ned of installing and registering it offers to run FH now and that would be the first run.

I finally managed to find the discount code and installed V 7 but when I click on the icon I get the following message

The code execution cannot proceed because mfc140u.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may fix this problem.

I have tried reinstalling 3 times, with the same result.

Any suggestions?

Try the techniques described in how_to:family_historian_installation_problems|> Family Historian Installation Problems.
In the last paragraph of the Introduction use the Run as administrator method even if you are in an Administrator account.
If that does not work, try the Windows Safe Mode method.

Are you getting Error 126: DLL Maybe Missing ?
If then try the advice at how_to:family_historian_installation_problems#error_126dll_maybe_missing_corrupt_or_wrong_version|> Error 126: DLL Maybe Missing, Corrupt or Wrong Version.
