Unknown Child

Post by royp » 28 Nov 2020 09:29

In the 1911 census for my family, it is stated that 2 children had died. I have found the details of one. Can i put an unknown child and sex into the tree, for appearance and possibly add information as and when it arises.

regards to all

Yes, just add a child to the family as you normally would, with Sex set to Unknown and a name of your choice (I would leave it blank, but other people might call them Unknown Bloggs, for example. Move them manually into the right order (as best you know it).

I'm assuming you've searched the GRO indices using the mother's maiden name to try to get more detail on them?

May also be worth checking the General Record Office birth indexes on their website and entering just the father's surname and mother's maiden surname to see if you can identify likely missing candidates - unfortunately you can only search for males and females separately and have a limit of 2 years either side of your search year, so may need to do a few searches, but this has worked for me in the past! I've also had a family where they seem to have recorded miscarriages as well as live births in their return on the 1911 census, judging by the number of possible candidates.

This ONLY works if you use the GRO site direct, the indexes on Ancestry and Find My Past do not have the option to search with mother's maiden name before (I think 1911)

Although FMP indicates on the entry screen that the Mother's Maiden Name is only applicable for births from 1911, they have actually been adding them in the last year or so (possibly longer) for births prior to that year. I have picked up a number of maiden surnames from the FMP transcripts for 1860 / 1870 births.

You can still use that method; all you have to do is choose either and then change the sex of the individual to 'clear sex' when the property box opens.
Kind regards, Stuart
