Updated maps in Version7?

I have been busy sorting through place names making sure the markers are in the correct place and thus correcting the geocoding . While doing this noticed the difference between Google maps and the current OpenStreet map on FH and how out of date it is. Is there any plans to update the map in Version 7 of FH, please?

I think you may be misunderstanding where the Map references are coming from. They don't come from within Family Historian, but from the Mapping Site(s) so any changes/corrections would have to be be made at source by those responsible.

OpenStreetMap is created by users and is free to use under an open licence and is dependent on (registered) users submitting information. Google, of course, is a law unto itself :D . If you are interested in improving the accuracy of OpenStreetMap then the sign-up page is: https://www.openstreetmap.org/user/new

BTW: The terms & conditions of testing FH V7 prevent anyone discussing any of its features.

Anyway, for many purposes, it is not an up-to-date current map that is needed, but a map appropriate to the era you are mapping events against.

This is perhaps a little off topic but I have been looking for a mapping tool for genealogy for some time. I have found one that not only will map locations but I can put in non genealogical data so I can map out a possible route from one place to another. The problem is that the underlying maps are almost worthless so I have not been able to use that product for my project.

Does FH mapping allow for mapping a route or just specific location from out genealogy?

I won't ask about V7

FH certainly does not offer route mapping between marker points.

It is quite a complex process, because rather like SatNav, the tool needs to know the position of roads, etc.
The best tool I've used is Google Maps and its Directions feature that maps routes via any number of points using various modes of transport such as walking, cycling, driving & public transport. It 'knows' the difference between footpaths, cycle paths, roads, and transport routes. The route can be captured using a screenshot. You have the choice between street maps, satellite maps & terrain maps.

Apologies for not replying sooner and thanks to all who posted.

I was completely unaware that OpenStreet map was sort of ‘community based’ but that makes sense and answers my question. I wish I’d known sooner as I probably could have filled in a few gaps. I’m just over half way so will sign up anyway and see what is involved.

My research is mostly in Pembrokeshire moving across South Wales to Monmouthshire and Somerset and many villages have disappeared over time and I make allowances for that, but it was nice to see a pub still going strong since the 1800’s in Burry Port and getting good reviews.

Thank you all. :)
