Reinstallation of V. 6 upgrade on New Hard Drive

Post by woods4thetrees » 09 Oct 2020 10:13

Hello Forum,

After installing a new hard drive on my PC, I am trying to reinstall FH version 6. I have the product key for version 5, which I purchased as a CD; and also the Licence Name and Registration Key I received when I upgraded via download to version 6 in October 2016.

The instructions I found tell me what I need but (unless I am having a blonde moment - and yes I am blonde! ) not what I need to do to download and reinstall. I tried downloading a v.6 free trial, which the system message tells me I cannot use to achieve a reinstall; and tried starting with the V.5 CD but the system says you cannot have any version of the software on the system prior to installing version 6. Is there a place to go for downloads that I have not yet found?

Thanks so much for any help and advice.
Steph :D

Steph

You need the download file that you got when you upgraded from V5. You did keep it somewhere safe didn't you? There are full details in the knowledge base about this see how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems.

I cant swear this is correct but I seem to remember when we had a similar situation with a new computer earlier this year,
Calico Pie sent me sign in details (name and pass number) for version 6.

If your numbers are not working, I would contact them as Calico Pie are the people who handle subscriptions. They are very quick and very helpful.

Once they send the info it is a good idea to save it, so avoid having to search old emails . I keep a text document holding my genealogy passwords and user names,

Thank you Valkrider and E Wilcock for your helpful and prompt replies.

Valkrider - I have to blush  and say I didn't think I would need the download file... I appreciate the e_problems link and I will get in touch with Calico Pie, hoping they will be kind!

Thanks again and best wishes to both.

Steph, you may not be entirely to blame for deleting the download file.

At one time the E-mail from Calico Pie said "After the upgrade has completed, you no longer need the file you downloaded."

I reported that to them back in 2015 but have no idea if that wording has been amended.

You may also find the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide useful.
Or it may highlight that you did not backup your customisations settings :o

Much of this thread appears to be a repeat of Second Copy of Software (16243).
