Merging two trees

I'm sure this must be covered somewhere in the knowledge base but I can't find it.

I imported a GEDCOM of my tree when I first got the programme but decided to start the same tree from scratch so I could learn how things work without messing up the original. But, I got carried away, as you do, and added lots and lots of sources and information that may or may not be on the original imported GEDCOM version. So now I have 93 individuals in the 'learning tree' and 230 in the original version. I feel I should merge them together before I go any further so I can add to the existing information rather than inputting everything from scratch.

What is the best way to do this?

I did make a start by opening the File > Merge/Compare option but when it asked me to Select the Family Historian Project File I didn't know where to look for it. Failed at the first hurdle!!

You know the command is Merge/Compare File so enter that in the Search... box top right here in the Forums page.
Then in the results tick the Knowledge Base option on the right and the top entries are what you are looking for.

To choose the Project/Gedcom navigate into the Family Historian Projects folder, and then the Project folder, to find either the .fh_proj FH Project File or the .ged Gedcom File.

There are several pitfalls so work through the advice carefully.

Make sure you have backups of both Projects just in case!

Thank you, Mike. It's all about knowing where to look ;)

Might be a long job but it's a good way to pass the time when it's just too hot to go in the garden.

So far so good.

If I have different birth dates for someone in the two files, (but without looking back I don't know which is correct), will it keep them both so I can correct it later?

The Merge dialogue says on the left what will be kept and discarded.
To keep two birth Dates will require two Birth events to be kept.

Don't forget to check all the tabs: Families, Sources, Media, etc.

Great. Thanks for your help. It’s been a long day but I think I’ve done it! No doubt I’ll find a few little glitches but it’s all looking OK on the surface.
