Yes, an Individual custom Attribute (rather than Event) named Natural Event would work.
An Attribute is only different from an Event in that it has a 'value' like Occupation, Education, Possession.
So the 'value' would describe the natural event and be included in Sentence Templates using the {value} code.

I advise that you do NOT define a Family custom Attribute but instead add the Individual Attribute to each person involved in the same way that Census events are used.

Custom attributes are supported in slightly different ways in other products.
However, the Export Gedcom File Plugin caters for those variants.

1. The _ATTR tag is converted to the FACT tag in products that support GEDCOM v5.5.1
2. The _ATTR tag is converted to the EVEN tag in products that allow a 'value' on Events
3. The _ATTR tag is converted to the EVEN tag and the 'value' moved to the Note field
