working with FH, what is the correct way to shut it down then, for example, re-activate the next day and carry on?
sometimes, just about every time, i've spent about 5 minutes to get it back up on my screen ... not the sample project but my own family project.
very frustrating and the air around me ends up a tad blue ...

All I do is to shut it down as you do and then the next day I click on the icon to start it up again.
5 minutes to start it up seems like an especially long time. How big is your database? Mine is just over 20,000 individuals and it only takes about 20 seconds for FH to load.

Definitely sounds like something is wrong somewhere. My relatively small 1000-person core database loads in 5 seconds on a 9-year-old computer! Fast start up was one of the attractions of FH for me, coming to it from Family Tree Maker, where slow starting and long processing times were routine.
How long does your computer take to boot up from cold? Are other programs also slow to load?

I don't think it is auto-start-up time but manual adjustments to switch from FH Sample Project to user's project.
Perhaps you have not adjusted the startup settings appropriately.
I guess you run FH then use File > Project Window, select your Project name and click Open Project.
Before you click Open Project, right-click your Project name and choose Set as Default Project.
Then next time you run FH it will open your Project immediately.
If you have not created a Project and so maybe just opening a GEDCOM file, let us know and we'll explain how to fix that.

thank you to all of you but i think tatewise hit the nail on the head.
i found a file called 'john clack 1584.fh.proj' and right-clicked it then in the sub-menu, i chose 'open with...' and a w10 menu appeared showing 'always use this app to open 'fh.proj' ' ... i ticked that then ok and my john clack project opened up.
perfect ... didn't see 'sample project' or 'set as default project' though ... not sure why but think i've managed to open up my family tree a whole lot faster than i did in the whole of this week.
i will try and set it up to accept my project as default as soon as i can get a spare moment.
so thank you again tatewise ... much appreciated.

With your Project open, another option is Tools > Preferences > Startup and click Select... > Make Curent File the Default.
Then you should NOT need to mess about with the .fh_proj file or anything else.
Just run the Family Historian program from its fh icon on the Start menu, Desktop, etc.
