Family Historian User Group

As a very new user I apologise if this question has been raised before.

I use Ancestry.co.uk as my online genealogy research tool. 2 weeks ago on first purchasing Family historian I created my first project by importing my gedcom file.

My research on Ancestry has moved on and my current gedcom file contains more data. Having imported the new gedcome file into a new project in Family historian (V6) my question is can I now merge the second project with the original project to create an updated version so that all of my media remains in my original project but the new data is imported from the second project.

Or am I making a mountain out of a molehill and there is an easier way to update the data in my original project from Ancestry.co.uk.

Personally, I would always treat my local Family Historian file as the base, or main version. Whilst all of the data that you need is on the Ancestry website your current system works. As your tree develops I am sure that you will not be able to supply all the information you collect from Ancestry. Just one experience of mine to illustrate this. I have an ancestor who owned three ships (information from "The National Archives") TNA. One of these was taken by the French and that directed him to apply to the King to become a Privateer. He took a French vessel off Martinique, brought it, and the French captain back to Dorchester where it was auctioned. All those papers are at TNA, where I photographed them and added them to my Family Historian database.

Family Historian IMO will always beat a web based commercial store for the research I collect.

Peter makes an interesting observation, and most FH users choose to treat their FH Project as the master database.

However, to answer your question, "Yes" you can merge two Projects and retain the data from both.

BTW: Have you seen the how_to:index#importing_to_family_historian|> Importing to Family Historian advice that has a section specifically for Ancestry with many useful tips including how to use FTM or RootsMagic to migrate Media, plus many general purpose procedures.

FH has the File > Merge/Compare File command to merge one Project into another, but there are some pitfalls for new users, so checkout the glossary:merge_compare_files|> Merge/Compare File guide.

Also, as a new user, I believe you have been advised to review the how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers which is full of advice that new users often ask about.

Agree completely. I also use Ancestry as a research tool, but all the collected research data goes directly into my FH project.
