Diagram showing cause and age of death
I've just created a new FH Project for my main ancestors for a medical reason. (Four of my first and second cousins have had rare blood cancers so we were interested to see if there was any pattern further back.) We just wanted to display their name, relationship to root, cause of death, and their age at death, so I tried to create a new custom diagram to do that. It's showing everything I need apart from the age at death. (That's important to the family because it's one thing dying of a heart attack when you're 88 but quite another when you're 32.)
I've tried to attach three pictures of the problem so you might be able to see where I've gone wrong!

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
It would help to see the Cause of Death items and explain why you have four entries for them.
The Data Ref you need is %INDI.DEAT.AGE% and that could be added to the Cause of Death item, or a <Custom Item> added just for Age at Death.
At most, you should only need one Cause of Death item and one Age at Death item.

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
I'm not sure I understand that advice yet but will wait for it to sink in!
I don't know where to find the Cause of Death items you mean ... but I think I ended up with an extra item when I tried to fix it. I double-clicked on the Cause of Death (see picture) so then I ticked the cause and age and unticked the others but all it seemed to do was repeat what I already had?

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
Just as an aside you have not used the Cause of Death sub field against the Death, but rather created a custom fact for the information, so make sure you pick up your custom fact and not the normal cause of death from the Death Fact.

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
Ah! The problem is not quite what I first thought.
It seems that you have either created or imported Custom Cause of Death Attribute Facts.
The more conventional approach is to use the standard Death event which has a Cause field and Age field.
So the first thing to understand is that the Information to include: tick box Cause refers to that Cause field, whereas your Cause of Death Attribute has the cause as its attribute value, in the same way an Occupation Attribute has the occupation as its attribute value.
However, I don't think that is your problem, but simply that the diagram boxes are too small.
So firstly try using Diagram > Layout & Scaling > Make All Boxes the Same Height
and then try using Diagram > Layout & Scaling > Reset All Box Sizes/Enable Autosize
Do either of those commands increase box sizes so that any Age: values are shown?
If so then we can make other changes to ensure you get the best design and remove redundant items.

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
Thank you, Mike, I actually see what you mean there. Why on earth didn't I just use the standard Death event in the first place. Duh!
As to the diagrams, I tried those two box-scaling changes but neither had any effect on showing the age values.

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
Jane, thank you for spotting my custom 'cause of death' fact! I have no idea why I chose to do that ... somehow I thought it would be easier. Clearly not!

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
OK, so try Diagram > Enable Moving/Resizing to show the Movement Control Box.
Now select a box with most Cause of Death text. e.g. Frederick Pelham FOTHERGILL
Left-click & drag the 'handles' on the edges/corners of the box to make it larger.
Does that reveal any Age: values?
If so then repeat the Diagram > Layout & Scaling > Make All Boxes the Same Height command.
If not then return to the Edit Text Scheme dialogue.
Select and X Delete all four entries for Cause of Death.
Start again with selecting Cause of Death on left and for Information to include: ensure just Age is ticked, and click OK all they way out.
Does that display what you want in the boxes?
If not then post your Edit Text Scheme dialogue again, but make the Used Items column wider so all is visible.
i.e. Left-click on vertical line in header between Used Items and Box Types and drag right.

Thanks for the clear instructions, Mike. I followed them all the way to the bottom (with no success) so here is the expanded text scheme box:

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
I have investigated a bit more and the Age tick option is NOT quite what it seems.
It is calculating the Age at the Date of the Cause of Death attribute based on the Birth Date.
But since you have entered no Dates at all for your Individuals the Age at cannot be determined so nothing is displayed.
Nevertheless, here is the workaround that will display the Age box in your Cause of Death attribute.
X Delete the Cause of Death, age at from Used Items.
Select the Cause of Death in Available Items and change the Add Item To Text Scheme options as follows.
In the Template box delete the trailing %INDI._ATTR-CAUSE-OF-DEATH.DATE:COMPACT% and click OK.
In the Used Items select the Cause of Death, age at item and click Edit button below.
In the Template box replace %INDI._ATTR-CAUSE-OF-DEATH.DATE:AGE_AT% with %INDI._ATTR-CAUSE-OF-DEATH.AGE% and click OK.
OK out and that should display what you want. Sorry it has taken so long.

Should I have deleted the Age: bit at the beginning because I'm getting this message:

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
I have to admit I took an educated guess at the %INDI._ATTR-CAUSE-OF-DEATH.AGE% Data Reference.
Use the << Insert data ref assistant and expand Individual + Attributes + Cause of Death + Age and use that instead.
It should be very similar, but the CAUSE-OF-DEATH part in the middle will be a little different.

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
Well, the good news is that the age is now showing and perfect. The bad news is that the cause of death has now disappeared. Sorry, Mike, I must have done something wrong there!

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
You know you said this:
"Now in the Used Items select the top Cause of Death item and click Edit button below.
In the Template box delete the trailing %INDI._ATTR-CAUSE-OF-DEATH.DATE:COMPACT% and click OK."
Should it still look like the picture attached or should I have done the Insert new part in there as well?

Yes, you deleted too much, so use << Insert data ref as before but only as far as Individual + Attributes + Cause of Death.

Re: Diagram showing cause and age of death
Sorry, Mike, but when I click on the Individual + Attributes + Cause of Death ... there is no option to save it so I just close it then OK out but nothing has been changed in the diagram ... it's still missing the cause of death?

You forgot to actually click onto and select Cause of Death so that it is highlighted and the Insert button activated.
