LDS AFN

I have looked in the KB and can not seem to find a clear answer. If I want to add LDS (latter day Saints) references to people in my Family Tree, how would I do that?? Is using the custom ID the right way to go about it or is there a plugin I have missed ??

There is a Religion fact, made just for that situation :D
Or were you meaning using an LDS film number as a source?

I suspect the ID meant is the unique identifier in the LDS mega tree, like KWJZ-HGK (which is for a distant relative of mine).

Using custom ID would make sense if everyone in your tree is going to have either no custom ID or only custom IDs in that format. Presumably you might have people in your tree who don't appear in the LDS tree or appear in some other online tree like Ancestry. How would you know which online tree the reference referred to?

I'be be tempted to create a custom attribute.

Helen, I seemed to have got that completely wrong, I didn’t realise that that was what Peter was referring to :)

I wonder if the ID is unique and consistent? If so, I’d create a specific source, and add the ID as text from source or something similar.

Where within source, perhaps.

It does depend on how Peter plans to use it.

I am not sure if the mega tree number has replaced the LDS Ancestral File Reference, if not you could use that field to record it. You can access it from the All tab or add it to your Property box if you want to use it regularly.

Yes that's the reference I am referring to. I like to record it so I can go back and check details later.

For consistency, I always put references like that (eg. GRO / Census refs, etc) in the Publication Information field of the Source Record.

Peter, you say you’d like to go back to check things at a later date, but can one use the code to search for individuals in the mega tree? I.e do LDS index them? If not, you’d be wasting your time keeping them!

Jane I could not find a fact entry for LDS Ancestral File Reference, at all.
What about if I used the National identity number standard attribute.?
Is the NIN number a national thing or applies to one or two countries only.

The LDS Ancestral File Reference is NOT a Fact. As Jane explained, it is hidden on the All tab as it is not widely used.

So open the Property Box, open the All tab, right-click the person's Name and choose Add Miscellaneous > LDS > Add LDS Ancestral File Number, which will add that field near the bottom of the All tab display, where you can enter your reference.

That is a bit awkward to use regularly, so the following instructions explain how to add it to the Main tab.
What I suggest is that the 2nd line that usually just shows the Note is changed to show LDS AFN and Note on one line.

In the Property Box, click the top right cog Menu > Customize Data Entry....
In the Customize Property Box dialogue ensure that Tab: Main is chosen top left.
Untick Show most commonly-used items only bottom left.
At the top of Available Items select <Custom Item> (for advanced users) and click > in middle to add to Selected Items.
In Choose Area select Main area for Individual (as opposed to spouse or shared areas) and click OK.
In New Custom Item dialogue set Custom Item Name: to LDS AFN and Note and tick both Part 1 and Part 2.
( If interested, click the Help button in any dialogue for more advice. )

In Part 1 set Label: to LDS AFN: and Data Reference: to %INDI.AFN% and below set Min Width: to 10 and Percent: to 10.

In Part 2 set Label: to = = Note: and Data Reference: to %INDI.NOTE2% and below set Min Width: to 40 and Percent: to 90.
Also set Alignment Group 2: to 4 and set Alignment Group 3: to 5 so it aligns with Sex & Occupation boxes.

Once happy with all those settings, then click OK top right.

Back in Customize Property Box dialogue use up arrow to move LDS AFN and Note (custom) up above Sex & Occupation.
Then select Note just above and click < in middle to remove it.
Finally click OK and those customisations will appear in the Main tab.

As a matter of interest, which other programs support those _FSFTID and _FGRAVE tags?

I suspect to create those tags initially you must have to edit the GEDCOM file.

_FSFTID: Rootsmagic, Legacy, Heredis; for FTM2019 search-n-replace _FSFTID with FSID, and for TMG, AFN.
_FGRAVE: Legacy

not for imports, and yes one entry for new files; the rest are added through FH.
