I have been checking and tidying up multiple minor media links in my family history (just a precaution for grandchildren if I peg out) . This evening, noticed that i no longer have Internet matches, following this up I found that for the last week or 10 days I have no Project file. I have been working exclusively with the .ged file. I do have a backup of the .fh_proj file date 28/05/2020.

Would you risk marrying that together with the current .ged file and if not, would I lose anything if I created a new Project by importing the .ged file that has been receiving new data and rationalised media links since that date?

I have read the Project Structure section in the Knowledgebase so I think I know what I'm doing. The .fh_proj file only seems to have header data on settings though I guess it must also save the relative position of it to the .ged file and I can't necessarily rely on the fact that before I began all this rationalisation of data the relationship between the two was as shown in that paragraph of hexadecimal.

The only relationship between the .fh_proj file and the .ged file is that they have the same filename and exist within the Project structured folders with that same filename as explained in how_to:v4:understanding_projects#project_structure|> Project Structure and you claim to understand.

Let me assume the Project name is PeterWilliams.
The \Family Historian Projects\PeterWilliams folder should hold the PeterWilliams.fh_proj Project file.
That folder will also hold the Public and PeterWilliams.fh_data folders.
That PeterWilliams.fh_data folder should hold the PeterWilliams.ged file and the standard folders shown in the Project Structure screenshot, which most importantly must include the Media folder.

Just editing the GEDCOM file should not disrupt the Project structure, unless you moved the GEDCOM file elsewhere.
You can try reconstructing the Project.

If that fails then you will have to import the GEDCOM file from scratch.
Only then will you discover if your Media manipulations are entirely satisfactory.

Whichever, method you use, I strongly advise you use the Tools > External File Links command and review it for X broken links or run the Check for Broken Media Links Plugin as discussed in Linked media files Fri 8th May 2020.

I have restored the .fh_proj backup file and it seems to work. If I run into problems this evening when I have time to interrogate it a bit more I will come back.
