Source & Citations

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to put this question, it's either FH or AS, but I'm sure Mike will move it if neccessary.

It's all to do with Source and Citations, and just to set the scene I'm mainly a splitter not a lumper.
I'm also in the process of cleaning up my data and it was during this that I found this anomaly.

Take the example of a marriage as follows.
You have: the Marriage fact
the Husbands residence
the Wife residence
the Husbands Occupation
the Minister
and two witness
Note the minister and witnesses are not people within the database, just names.

Using FH to enter all the source information including the witnesses the source record shows 4 citations.

if you use AS to enter the info you end up with the source record showing 7 citations. i.e its included the minister & two witnesses in the count. Is this correct?

Cheers

Yes, that is correct, because the Minister and both Witnesses have been derived from the Marriage Certificate Source, so those three Fact Witness entries need Citations.

If you had used the Automatic source citations feature of FH, then you would have 7 Citations too.

Presumably, when you added the 3 Fact Witnesses by Name only, you omitted to add Citations for them.

Thanks for the explanation Mike.

So as far as your last statement, how do I now add the citation to the ones where I didn't use AS or Automatic source citations. It looks like I could have quite a few to do.

In your example, presumably those Fact Witnesses were added to the Marriage Event.
So select that Marriage Event in the Facts tab such that the yellow Source Citation pane shows the Citation.
Click the Copy Citation button in the toolbar just above the Entry Date box.

Now right-click the Marriage Event and select Witnesses to list the Witnesses for Marriage.
Select each Witness in turn and notice that the yellow pane Sources For box reflects each one.
For each Witness click the Paste Citation button highlighted next to Copy Citation button.
That should add the same Citation as for the Marriage Event.

If you have a very large number to do, then a Plugin might be worth writing.

Thanks :D for that and as you say a Plugin might be a good idea, but that will be for another day.
