Sorry to be a pain.....

But I have spent the afternoon looking on this forum for an answer to my subject title....there are a few other similar threads, but I cannot seem to find the answer yea or neigh.

I put all my media (generally written and not photos) in the system and then link them to a Source and then Auto Source Citation, then Fact and Individual. OK with that. Recently, I have been coming across media.....like 11 pages of WW1 Military history documents for one individual. Each page I have captured and set up each media entry as XYZ's WW1 Military History Documents Part 1, then the 2nd page jpeg as Part 2, etc etc 11 entries in all, then created the Source and attached each one of the media files to that. The process works but is a little long winded.

Is there anyway of integrating all the 11 images into one image/type entry rather than 11? So that when you click on the Source you would see one media file with all the images in rather than 11 separate ones?

Had an idea.....PDF worked until I wanted to set up a media file.....doesn't recognize pdf extension.....thought about word doc, same problem, then tried to find a pdf /doc program to convert to jpeg....works but you are back to a 11 separate images!!

Time for a glass or three of wine.....

Is there a solution or work around to this or is it 11 jpegs, 11 media entries, 11 attachments to a Source?

I guess you did not look in the Knowledge Base wiki where there is much advice not often found in the Forums?
See how_to:v4:adding_multimedia|> Adding Photographs and Other Multimedia especially under Adding Other Media.

Typically, when adding a Media file, the selection dialogue filters the file type to Image Files in the lower right box.
But click that drop list and choose All Files (*.*) and ANY type of file can be added.

However, there are trade offs...

A PDF (or a DOCX) file can contain multiple pages, but can only be viewed by clicking the triangular Open in Editor/Player button within a Media window. Such Media cannot be included in Reports or Diagrams nor in FH Create a Website pages unless you use the Improve Website CD DVD HTML Plugin.

If you want all the document pages to appear in Reports then each page must be a separate image file (JPG, PNG).
The only other option would be to use an image editor and compile all the pages into one composite image file.
e.g. with 12 pages, you could combine them into a 3 x 4 grid.
But when viewed in a Media window or included in a Report they may be too small to read.

I attach as 11 separate images to one source.

However, with a good image editing programme they could be combined into one image. Load the first one and then increase the canvas size to 11 times its current width or height whichever you prefer and then drop each of the other images into it. The save it. Be aware that this is likely to produce a large image which may take up more disk space than the 11 images it may also be a challenge for the image viewer to display it. Also other people viewing the image may find it difficult to display.

Mike....I did go through the tutorial etc adding media and eventually jpeg and pdfs etc (IRfan springs to mind), but like I mentioned in my mail, it didn't seem to fit what I wanted to do and follow the process that I had always been doing since buying the product in 2009. Hence why I thought that I would ask the question. Thanks for answering by the way! Is there any appetite for attaching pdfs and docs to individual facts in FH?

From a recent post re 'Old Photo Restoration' and suggestions given, I have been trialling a few programs....Currently testing Paintshop Pro. So I tried both your suggestions re adding jpegs together. I have tested with 4 pages of a Military Attestation and it worked very well....like the one suggested by Valkrider, i.e. next to each other horizontally. Checked it through the individual fact and the on a narrative report, seems fine to me with the zoom options. So happy with that. I am going to try with more pages to see if it really is acceptable, perhaps you already know the answer.

PP now, not in 'lockdown' but being very cautious, especially when I hit the ball in the woods on the golf course!!

The issues with attaching any of the media types to any of the allowed places are all much the same.
So whether they are PDF, DOCX, JPG, PNG, etc, etc, they will behave in the same way, regardless of being attached to the Individual/Family/Source/Place record Media tab, to any Fact, or to any Citation.

All that WILL be different is WHERE they appear in Reports (and Diagrams).

IrfanView will do much the same as PaintShop Pro, but with the advantage that it is entirely FREE forever.
