New Laptop New software

Post by Linda researcher » 07 May 2020 17:05

I currently use Version 5 which was updated from Version 4. I still have the discs and Key Numbers. I am shortly to buy a new laptop and thought I would buy the disc of Version 6.

My question is - Will I be able to transfer my projects from my old computer over to the new computer running Version 6?

Your advice would be appreciated.
Happy hunting.

Hi Linda,
It is excellent you are asking such questions beforehand rather than after going down the wrong path :D

I would suggest you migrate from old PC to new PC with the same Version of FH on both.
Otherwise, you are dealing with two issues at once: A) migrating PC to PC; B) learning FH V6;

I strongly advise you buy a full FH V6 DOWNLOAD from Calcio Pie Family Historian website and NOT a CD box set.
Then you will get a FREE upgrade to FH V7 when it is released.
It also avoids needing to ever install from your old CD, so you can throw them away.
See https://store.family-historian.co.uk/pr ... -download/ for details of the offer.

You must not only migrate your Projects but also your custom settings of Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Plugins, etc, etc...
Detailed steps are in how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide.

Many thanks for responding. See if I've got this right.

When new laptop comes I install FH from my Version 4 and Upgrade Version 5 discs; then migrate my projects over to new laptop.

Then when that is all sorted; purchase and download Version 6 to my new laptop. Will I then have to migrate my projects to Version 6?

I hear what you say about buying the download version, but I have seen an offer of version 6 on disc which comes with the offer of a free download of Version 7 (when it comes out). Its from S&N Genealogy.
Happy hunting.

Not exactly. I would recommend a slightly different route.

Buy the full FH V6 DOWNLOAD from Calcio Pie Family Historian website for several reasons:
  • It is £4 cheaper at £35.99 from Calico Pie versus £39.95 from S&N
  • It will probably arrive quicker by Email
  • New laptops often don't have a CD drive (why would they when most software is bought as a download)
Install FH V6 on your existing PC and get used to its new features now.
It automatically converts your existing Projects.

When your new laptop comes, install FH V6, and migrate from PC to PC.

There is a similar ancestralsources:ancestral_sources_migration_guide|> Ancestral Sources Migration Guide.

Sorry I'm just getting back.

When I purchase Version 6 and download will it just install over the top of my current Version 5? I've been reading and rereading the steps to take from the Knowledge base and my brain is nearly there.

Thanks again for your advice.
Happy hunting.

Yes, just install the V6 download over V5.

Make sure you keep the downloaded V6 installation .exe file and the licence key safely part of your backups.
See how_to:family_historian_installation_details#installation_archive|> Installation Archive.

This is driving me mad. New laptop has arrived. Ive installed Version 6 on my old computer over the top of version 5 That's OK. Ive installed Version 6 on my new laptop That's OK. I copied the entire Family Historian Projects folder from my old PC onto a USB pen drive memory stick. That's OK.

BUT what do I do next. I can't go into the various ways Ive tried to get the file to marry up with FH on new computer without success. I am now at the position of having deleted the Family Historian Projects folder from my new laptop and it is now just sitting there on my pen drive. I am sure things were so much easier in the past. Reading the "Standard Migration Steps" from the Knowledge Base, which I printed off makes me feel like I need a degree in computer science. I am pretty computer literate (been using computers for 20 years) but come on.

Can someone please give me some advice.
Happy hunting.

As you have deleted the new Family Historian Projects folder you can simply copy the Whole Family Historian Projects folder from the USB stick in to your Documents folder.
