Starting New Project

Post by rfj1001 » 29 Apr 2020 10:42

I want to start a new project but use the fairly heavy customisation of tabs, flags and icons on trees, sources, place name lists, etc. that I've built up over the years on my main project.

Any advice on the best way to do this will be appreciated.

Many thanks

Just create the new Project. All customisations apply to all Projects.

Source and Place records are a different matter.
It is possible to migrate them from one Project to another, but if there is a great deal of sharing then maybe a single Project would better. Otherwise, you will regularly be updating the two overlapping Projects in tandem.

Thanks Mike,

I did that before I posted but only some of the customisation seemed to go over. So the ones I've spotted so far are :

1 my records window is only partly customised eg I have a field on the main tab for whether or not probate has been checked. Field name is there, but a tick box isn't.

2 Sources and places lists are empty. (You mention this would be the case in your post.)

3 A series of small icons I'd expect to show on diagrams aren't showing but the Record Flag conditions are there in the Diagram Options Box

There's no danger of having 2 projects with the same people in. This is just something I'm doing for a friend so no overlap at all.

My only thought, and this is why I posted to the group first when the New Project approach didnit work fully, was to take a copy of my main project, rename the copy and then using split tree helper, etc. delete all the records I don't want.

Would that work or is there a better way ?

Ok, I admit that I was economic with the truth, and a few features are not fully global unless you take extra care.
  1. I think you are talking about the Property Box > Main tab and not the Records Window?
What is the field Data Reference? With that, I can explain the problem.
  2. Since the new Project has no overlap, it is unlikely many Sources and Places will be common.
  3. Diagram Icons rely on Icon files that could be anywhere on your PC.
So depending on the full file path they may not be visible to the new Project.
The best location for all Icons is the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Icons folder and then the Diagram Boxes Icon Features will be global even on different PC as long as that C:\ProgramData\... folder is copied across.
What is the file path to the Icons in the Project that works correctly?
Yes, you could use File > Project > Window > More Tasks > Copy Project which will rename the copy, and then use the Split Tree Helper on the copy, but I suspect few Source and Place records will ever get used.

Thanks Mike,

I'll have a go at your copy project suggestion but I've hit a problem at the first hurdle - it is greyed out together with other options on the same dropdown list :(

Screenshot is attached.

I then loaded the sample project that comes with FH to see if that worked but I got the same result.

Any thoughts?

Did you select which Project you wanted to be copied before clicking More Tasks?
The same goes for all those other Project specific greyed out options.

Have you resolved points 1. and 3. that were causing you problems?

If that field is based on a flag, the flag won't exist if there are no records with that flag set. Once you have an individual with the flag set the tick box will appear. Once the flag is created you can unset it on the individual and unless you remove the flag using the Named Lists and Flags dialog the tick box will still be there.
