mapping places

Post by pete56 » 15 Apr 2020 20:54

I am new to this program and have a question to ask of you all. When I go to the map window and am looking at an individual there is a list that comes up showing things such as birth, residence etc. However, every once in a while there is a ? listed not a check mark. Is this showing I have an error? How does one repair this? Thanks

Welcome to the FHUG Pete.

One way of finding out that sort of thing is to press the F1 keyboard key to obtain The Map Window Help page.
That trick often works when there is no Help button as mentioned in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers in the how_to:family_historian_documentation|> Family Historian Documentation section.

From that Help page click Map Window Legend for an explanation of the icons used, where it says:
? Automatic geocoding failed. Place was not found.

The correction needed depends on many factors, but hinges on what you have entered in the Place field.
One solution is to Enable MarkerDragging as explained in the Help page.
To get automatic geocoding needs better information in the Place field and some advice is provided in the glossary:places|> Places and Addresses which is another topic in how_to:key_features_for_newcomers|> Key Features for Newcomers.
At the end of that advice are links to many previous Forum Posts on this topic that I recommend you study, because getting your Place and Address fields consistently organised is important.
