GRO Listing
Hi,
I have being adding births with the GRO events and was wondering why it doesn't always change the birth date to quarter date, especial if I have already entered a census previously.
Also is it possible to produce a list of the individuals with the GRO entries to see who's birth I haven't found?

Re: GRO Listing
Hi Trudy,
Do you mean you have been using the Add GRO Source Plugin to add Birth, Marriage & Death GRO Index records?
If the Birth Event already exists with a Date then the Plugin does NOT alter it.
If there was no event or no date then the Plugin does fill it in.
See the current thread at Add GRO Source plugin (16641) discussing this Plugin.
There is an attached prototype update to the Plugin that you may find useful.
They are also discussing the option of updating an existing Date if the GRO Index Quarter date is more accurate.
There are various ways to obtain the list you requested.
One technique is to put them in a Named List called say Missing Birth Certificates, and work through them.

- Open the Records Window on the Sources tab and select your GRO Birth Index source record.
Then run the Where Used Record Links Plugin that will list all the linked cited Birth Events.
However, that list will include those Birth Events for which you have found Birth Certificates. - A Custom Query could list each Individual with a Birth Event that has a GRO Index Citation but does not have a Birth Certificate Citation. However, the exact details depend on the Titles and Types you have used for your Source records, and whether you have such citations in a consistent order.
We also need to know how good you are at writing Custom Queries and how much detail we must provide.

Re: GRO Listing
Hi Mike,
Thank you for your reply, I have been using both the GRO Source and GRO events plugin. Unfortunately, I think I have set them both up wrong as I do not have GRO birth index listed in the source list.
To tell you the truth I think I have done a lot of things wrong on setting up my project as I am not sure how to use sources or why. I have uploaded my tree from Ancestry but none of the pictures of the census etc was uploaded with it. So what I have been doing is going to the Society of Genealogists and send the pictures of the census etc to my home email and then uploading them to my project using Ancestral sources and now I have two entries for the information which are listed as residential and census, but I am confusing myself and have deleted some and left others, to tell you the truth I do not have a clue as to what I am doing or why.
I know that the Society of Genealogists is doing a workshop on the 16th May for beginners. I think that might be my best bet as, as I need things to be explained to me really simply and with someone at my side showing me.
Thank you for your help.

Re: GRO Listing
It is not possible to use the Add GRO Source Plugin without nominating at least one Source record.
So you might have just one GRO Index source record, instead of one for each of Birth, Marriage & Death.
If you have also been using the Add GRO Event Plugin then those events have no Source Citation.
Therefore, considering your last question, it is going to be difficult to list the Birth Events for which you have a GRO Index and need to order Birth Certificates.
The key to managing genealogy records successfully is to be consistent.
As you have discovered, online family trees such as at Ancestry and FindMyPast do NOT transfer media images, partly because they are licenced & copyrighted and you are granted access by your subscription, so they are not keen to give away copies too easily.
Unfortunately, Ancestry prefers to record Census details using a Residence fact.
That explains why you are seeing Census facts created by Ancestral Sources alongside Residence facts from Ancestry.
Going to the workshop sounds like a good idea.
If it is the half-day course then it is specifically for Family Historian and it says:-
"This workshop covers using Family Historian software. The workshop does not cover general family history research."
So you may benefit from a family history research workshop too.

If data has been downloaded from ancestry there will be residence facts for each census.twinkledays wrote: ↑27 Feb 2020 19:30...

If images have been obtained from SoG you probably don't want to add them through Ancestral Sources because that will add another fact for each census - hence the two entries.
Either:
- Attach the media to the relevant "census-residence" facts download from Ancestry (or their citations*) - with the option of using a plug-in (see Change Any Fact Tag) to convert (with care) those "census-residence" facts to census facts afterwards
- Use a plug-in to to convert those "census-residence" facts to census facts then attach the media to those facts (or their citations*)

Re: GRO Listing
That is all good advice David, but from what she says, I don't think Trudy is ready for such techniques.
Let her attend the SoG workshops and then she will be in a better position to take up that advice.
BTW: Assuming the Residence facts have the correct Census dates, then the Change Any Fact Tag Plugin can set a filter to just change those ones to Census events.
An advantage of using AS (after the changes) is that it creates 'better' Source records, because I think Ancestry puts the details in the Citations and has a single 'lumped' Census Source record.

Thank you all for your support, I think a training day will be good for me so I can see the advantages of all the different techniques that you have described.

Re: GRO Listing
Trudy, I don't think the SoG workshop will answer all your questions, as it is focussed on the basics of using FH so probably won't cover Plugins and won't cover the how and why of source documents.
You said you are "not sure how to use sources or why" and I doubt if that workshop will give you many answers.
Take a look at research:getting_started|> Getting Started with Genealogy Research which leads you through some basic tips and introduces the concepts for source citations.

Re: GRO Listing
Thank you for your suggestions Mike I will do that, as I think I got excited and just jumped in and got myself confused.
Have read a few websites and books but they never mentioned sources so never thought about them until I bought FH. Now I have a lot of information on my tree but I know I need to sort out and check as I have already gone down one path that was wrong.

Re: GRO Listing
After you've done the SoG course, you might want to switch to the London Metropolitan Archives to do your Ancestry searches - it's a little less fusty, less cramped and they often have a couple of volunteers to sit with you (not sure if they're there every day) as well as the Archive staff who are also helpful.
It's also cheaper (£5 for a day's photo license) and only a little way up the road
