Yes, I think you should definitely pursue Calico Pie over the first issue. There is absolutely no reason to inhibit any editing options when the context is unambiguous.

The Media for Fact dialog is the one with the ‘wrinkle’ causing the problems. As you say, the radio toggle button idea would solve that problem as long as multiple instance of the same media are always shown. However I suspect that Calico Pie will say that the purpose of that dialog is to show the user at a glance all the images associated in any way with the fact. That means they want to be able to show the Fact, Source and Citation media all at once, not as alternative displays.

The links to Facts can be fully edited from that dialog. It's the links to Sources and Citations which have editing restrictions. That would be OK if links to Sources and Citations could be fully edited via the Show Media button in the Sources for pane, which brings us back to the first issue.

Those Media links to Facts cannot quite be fully edited because the Link to Detail frame options are missing.

Maybe a solution is to have a radio toggle option for Show All in which all the options would be inhibited, as well as toggle options for Facts, Citations, and Sources, giving a four-way choice?

Ah, I hadn't noticed that the Link to Detail option was missing completely in that context! Why on earth is that? (Another anomaly: usually when an option is disabled the button/text are still there in the usual place but greyed out. But in this case they have been removed completely.)

So there are two possible solutions:

1. A four-way toggle button in the Media for Fact dialog, as you suggest, to create an unambigous context in which full editing could be restored for all three types of link. (But users might wonder why all editing is inhibited if they have Show All selected. And should the Show All option show every instance of every media item or just one, to give an overview?)

2. Restore the Link to Detail option for media links to the Fact so that they can be fully edited in the Media for Fact dialog, but leave the editing of Source and Citation links disabled. These should then be made fully editable in the Show Media dialog of the Source pane. (Users might still wonder why these cannot be edited in the Media for Fact dialog but at least there would be some rationale to it.)

Oh dear what have I started. Sorry I can't add input to this issue as I'm totally out of my depth. But thank you all for pursuing this with Calico Pie.

Yes, that is a good summary.
The Show All preferably should show every instance of every Media as some might have Detail Frames and others none for the same image. The alternative is to show each unique image in full without any replicas and ignoring Detail Frames and merging Fact, Citation & Source links.

I have found yet another anomaly in the Media Property Box on the Links tab.
The Add Frame Only and Select frame... icons work as expected, but a frame cannot be deleted.
Usually, once a frame is selected the Delete key will remove it, but not here!
I have yet to find any way to remove such a frame :o
Note that currently this is the only dialogue in which the Fact and Citation links can have frames managed.

Interesting. As I normally use the Links tab in the main Media Window (which behaves the same way as the Links tab in the Property box) I hadn't realised it was ever possible to use the delete key to remove a frame! But I don't think the need has ever arisen.

As you are collecting anomalies, here is another one: In the Links tab (in either the Media Window or the Property box) when you click Add Simple Link the menu option to link to a Place behaves differently from the Individual, Family and Source options. They all open a dialogue to select the required record, but in the case of Place records there are no filter boxes at the top. The other three all have filter boxes. I did report this during v6 beta testing (when Place records were introduced) but nothing was done. Not a major problem, just a mild niggle.

I posted three specific scenarios for:
  • Facts tab, Show Media button, Media for Fact dialogue, Edit Media Item linked to Fact.
  • Sources For pane, Show Media button, Media for Citation dialogue, Edit Media Item linked to Citation.
  • Sources For pane, Show Media button, Media for Citation dialogue, Edit Media Item linked to Source Record.
The above contexts offer very different sets of options for no apparent reason, unless I am missing something!

I also reported the inability to delete frames for Media linked to Facts or Citations, and that the Add Simple Link option for a Place does not offer the Records Window style Filters.

The reply to "Source, Citation, Fact linked Media anomalies" #975682 suggests they have no explanation for the anomalies:
OK thank you. I have added logged these questions with the other points you raised.
