custom text schemes

Post by stuartd » 19 Jan 2020 21:55

I have just transferred my Family Historian program and projects to a new computer (and from Win7 to Win10), and almost everything has been successful. But my custom text schemes do not appear in the relevant list in the Diagram Options box. However, they are there. The path - C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Text Schemes has two sub-folders, Custom and Standard; but only the contents of Standard appear in the Diagrams Options list.
I'd be grateful for advice on how to resolve this.
Many thanks.

The C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Text Schemes\ folder does NOT have any subfolders.
The C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\ folder is the installation folder and must never be altered in any way!
I hope you have not been trying to copy anything into there.

You may have got it confused with the C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Text Schemes\ folder that does have both Custom and Standard subfolders, and are some of the many customisation folders, etc.
I would be surprised if you have not customised anything else such as Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Plugins, Fact Sets, etc.
In fact, from your default font (10937) and convert lower case surnames (10885) postings, I know you have customised such things. So all those other custom settings need to migrate from PC to PC too.

That process is documented in the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide.
It is a well trodden path followed by many users, so it does work, but if you have any questions please ask.

It can mostly be done manually as explained in how_to:move_settings|> Move Family Historian Settings and Projects but the Migration Guide Plugin method is much easier.

Thanks for your quick and thorough response, Mike.
There are text scheme sub-folders (Custom and Standard) in the Program File path that I stated originally; so I suppose I must have copied them there at some point...... :?
The guidance for Migration assumes, not unreasonably, that one still has access to the old PC/harddrive. Unfortunately this is not the case for me; so I've probably lost other customisations - but they won't take too much effort to re-do. The customised text schemes are there on the new PC, albeit in the wrong place. So I just need to move/copy them to somewhere that will enable FH to recognise their existence.
There is no folder C:\Program Data on my new PC - I hadn't noticed this before and is does surprise me as I would have thought all programs would make use of such a folder. If I type 'program data' into the taskbar search box it produces a link to : C:\Users\Microsoft Windows\Documents\Family Historian\Program Data\ which includes a folder Text Schemes and sub-folders Custom and Standard.
Apart from this loss of customisations FH is working prefectly on the new PC.
Any further guidance would be much appreciated.
Kind regards,
Stuart

ProgramData is normally hidden so make sure you have changed Windows File Explorer to show hidden files and folders.

Thank you, Jane.
The path that Mike referred to is now visible. I have copied the custom schemes across to that folder and they now appear in the Diagram Options box as expected.

Please, please, don't get confused between C:\ProgramDat and anything called Program Data.

Firstly, to reveal C:\ProgramData\ see glossary:family_historian_program_data_folder|> Family Historian Program Data Folder under the Notes for Windows 8, 8.1, 10 that explains how to View any Hidden Items.

You may be in luck with C:\Users\Microsoft Windows\Documents\Family Historian\Program Data\ as that looks like it may be a Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin backup.
Does the C:\Users\Microsoft Windows\Documents\Family Historian\ folder have subfolders for Application and may be Tutorial Files as well as Program Data? Does it also hold the files Registry.keys and Version.data and maybe some image files, etc?
If so, what is the Date Modified on those folders and files that I specifically mentioned?
If you can answer those questions positively, then there may be a Plugin restore option solution.
So don't do anything else until that avenue has been explored.

If that Plugin restore option is fruitless, then you could try copying from:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Text Schemes\Custom\
to
C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\Text Schemes\Custom\
but take care not to upset the master .fht files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Family Historian\Text Schemes\ :!:

Jane's, yours, and my postings have crossed each other.

I'm pleased to report that this does now seem to be resolved.
I suspect that there may be some duplicate folders left, but take the view that since they aren't stopping FH working I'll not risk deleting anything!
Again, thanks to you both for your help with this.

Stuart
