Hello readers,
Problem with Census events to what is showing in the Individual View.
Previously I had ie. Son appeared in the census of Albert Kain.
Now I have Son census of Albert Kain.
Presumably the text in the Census fact Sentence Template is not correct this is what I copied from Family Historian Census Event for UK 1939 Register '{individual} appeared in the {=TextIf( %FACT.DATE% = DateAt(1939,9,29), "1939 register", "census")} {date} {place} {age}'.
'appeared in the' is not being displayed.
Thank you.

I have moved this to the FH General Usage Forum that is more appropriate.

Your Sentence construction is non-standard. Where is it getting the name Albert Kain ?

Please check the Tools > Fact Types > Census > Edit button to ensure the Sentence Template has been copied correctly.
The " appeared in the " text is unconditional, so it looks like it perhaps got lost in the copy & paste.
If any doubt, then copy & paste your Sentence Template expression into your Reply here.

Alternatively, perhaps you have edited the Sentence just in the Census event for that person.
In which case a different technique needs to be discussed to determine the best solution.

Hello Mike,
The sentence construction was copied from the topic 'Family Historian Census Event for UK 1939 Register'. See Details third paragraph.
What should the sentence be?
The name Albert Kain is the name of the record in I have mislead you as that was his birth.
I should have as per my last comment 'appeared in the' is not being displayed.
I have checked the Sentence Template many times and still cannot see anything wrong. In fact I copied what it is and pasted it in to the post of my problem.
I'll paste the sentence again for you. {individual} appeared in the {=TextIf( %FACT.DATE% = DateAt(1939,9,29), "1939 register", "census")} {date} {place} {age}
No I haven't edited the Sentence in the Census for the person. All census facts are now showing the same incorrect format.
ie 'Wife Census of Albert Kain'. When I believe is should read 'Wife appeared in the census 1911 Birkenhead, Cheshire'.

I suspect what you are looking at are not actually principal Census events but Fact Witnesses of the Census.
Do they have a blue arrow to the left?
I think what you are describing is the short summary in the Facts list near the top.
What does it say in the Sentence at the bottom?
I suspect: She was a Wife at Census of Albert Kain in 1911 in Birkenhead, Cheshire.

The Sentence Template being discussed only applies to the principal Census event (for Albert Kain in this example).
It also only works if you are entering the full date of 29 Sep 1939 for the 1939 Register Census events.

It sounds like you are adding each of the household members of the Census as Fact Witnesses with the Role of Wife, Son, Daughter, etc.
So in Tools > Fact Types > Census > Edit those Witness Roles are listed towards the bottom.
Use the Roles button, then select each Role in turn, and click Edit to reach the Witness Sentence Template where you need to replace {label} with {=TextIf( %FACT.DATE% = DateAt(1939,9,29), "1939 register", "census")} to affect the Sentence at the bottom of the Facts tab.
To alter what it says in the list at the top of the Facts tab you must click Advanced button and set the Override Template to such as {role name} in {=TextIf( %FACT.DATE% = DateAt(1939,9,29), "1939 register", "census")} of {principal}.

BTW: This use of Fact Witnesses for Census households is not the method supported by Ancestral Sources and is not recommended in how_to:recording_census_records|> Recording from a Census Record, but I know is preferred by some users and therefore needs an extra set of definitions for all the Witness Roles as explained above.

If it helps, I use a generic sentence for all census facts and my construct is

<para>{individual} appeared in the census taken on< {%FACT.DATE:DAY_OF_WEEK%}>< {date}>< at {_place}>< {age}><, {note}>.

I don't use witnesses for census entries as I wish the note to be specific to that person, an example output is

I think David's template and sentence needs a little explanation.
Everything from , a married painter living with his wife Ada... onwards is derived from the Note field on the Census event via the <, {note}> code in the template.

BTW: If you replaced the word census with {=TextIf( %FACT.DATE% = DateAt(1939,9,29), "1939 register", "census")} then that example sentence would say: Robert appeared in the 1939 register taken on... while all other census years would still say Robert appeared in the census taken on... as before.

However, I think Genie15 is not having problems with the main Sentence Template but with the Witness Sentence Template and the Override Template for the Facts tab due to the use of Fact Witnesses.

Hello Mike & David,
This is more complicated for me than I thought it was when all I did was downloaded Census events. But I will over come it.
Mike, you have made it much clearer. The Sentence wasn't shown on my screen, I was by my mistake referring to the 'title' of the facts list in the Individual window.
Now I know as the principle has a blue dot and the other (wife) has a blue arrow, 'Fact Witnesses'.
So I can confirm the sentence for the Principle is correct as 'He appeared in the census on 2 April 1911 in Birkenhead, Cheshire.
Must read more of the help instructions. Not used FH for a long time. Sorry.

You are right, I am adding household members as Fact Witnesses. The sentence for the Wife is '{individual} was a {role name} at {label} of {principal} {date} {place}'. Which is correct text in the Sentence at the bottom.

Yes, I know my use of the witnesses is not supported by Ancestral Sources which why I'm now trying to modified my data to suit. Put it off long enough. But initially seemed to me to be the easier method before I knew about Ancestral Sources.

I see that {note} has been added to David's sentence. Not sure it's for me. Maybe later.

Many thanks for sorting me out. Mainly down to my ignorance of what Family Historian.

Now to find out more about the codes etc. and prepare my data for Ancestral Sources.
