I cannot back up my FH project !!

Post by fsaad »

Dear friends,
Whenever I try to back up my project, I receive a message saying " Unable to open zip file. Cannot perform backup"
What should I do?

Hello, I hope you solved the I lost media files from my FH project (17210) problem last month?

To help resolve your problem I need to ask you some questions to understand the details.

Have you been successfully using Project backups in the past?
When did your Project backups stop working?

Please confirm you are actually running a Project.
Does the very top of the main FH window say - Family Historian Project - ?

Exactly what command are you using?
Is it File > Backup/Restore > Full Backup (Entire Project Folder) ?
After entering a command like that, you should get an Enter Backup File Name dialogue.
What folder have you chosen to save the backup?

Dear Mr Mike,
Thank you for your reply.
I am sure that I am opening a family historian project.
I should also tell you that I have two projects of my family:
1- Saad Family
2- Saad Faamily - males only
The first project has no problem and could be backed up easily but the second one is the problem and now it is open and I am afraid if I close it without backing up, some data will be lost.
On the other hand, I always select full backup. The file is saved in this folder :
FH Project Backup - عائلة سعد - الذكور - 2019-12-11 2213
and save as type: Zipped File (*.zip)

The file is saved in this folder :
FH Project Backup - عائلة سعد - الذكور - 2019-12-11 2213
That does not look like a folder, it looks like a previously saved project backup. You need to select the folder at the next level up. Otherwise FH will be trying to save the new backup inside the previous backup, which is a zipped file. That would explain why you get the error message " Unable to open zip file. Cannot perform backup".

Dear Lorna, Thanks for replying. I tried to make a new folder to save the backup file but I received the same message. I feel that I cannot move ahead from this point.

I have been able to reproduce your problem by creating a Project with a foreign language name like yours.
It is your foreign language characters that are preventing the ZIP file from being saved.

You have two options:
1) Remove those foreign language characters from the File name and replace with say Saad Family - males only before using Save.
2) In File > Project Window use More Tasks > Rename Project to change its name from your foreig language name to say Saad Family - males only.

I am sorry you have to do that, but it must be something to do with the Windows File System file naming rules.
