Installing on 2nd computer

Post by SpencerDudeUK » 29 Oct 2019 12:34

I'm sorry to rehash this old question, but all the subject matter I've seen on this forum seems to revolve around a CD install. I'm sure I installed onto my desktop PC from a download, but now can't find it (I've 'cleansed' my PC several times since). I do have the registry key, but not an installation executable. I'm sure I read in these forums that downloading the demo version won't work, so I'm stuck as to how to get a second copy installed on my laptop. Can anyone advise?

Yes, ideally you need that installation download file, which should have been saved in an archive for just this eventuality.
However, if you purchased a full licence and not an upgrade from V5 then the trial version should be OK.

See the following advice that includes how to get Calico Pie to send the download again if necessary.

Thanks for the quick response - and it appears you can do it by downloading the demo file. I've done that now and it installed OK. I don't need to worry about the migration process, since all the data is on One Drive. Thanks again :)

Where are your customisation settings for Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Fact Definitions, Plugins, etc, etc...
I suspect you may only have your Projects in OneDrive and they don't include most customisation settings.

Yes, that's true, but in actual fact I only use the laptop for visits to records offices/libraries, etc., so don't generally need to change anything there - as long as the records synchronise on my return, I'm happy. :)

Do you use any custom fact definitions that you have created via the Tools > Fact Types > New feature?
If so, you won't be able to add such custom facts to records on your laptop.
Such custom facts can be migrated via the File > Import/Export > Fact Set commands.

Ah! Yes, I see where you're coming from. On my laptop I only have the 'Standard' Fact types. By that token, would you constantly need to update one computer from the other when adding custom fact types, or could you simply set the path to a common Fact Type folder on One Drive, for instance?

I use fhugdownloads:contents:link_shell_extension|> Utility ~ Link Shell Extension to set up links to folders in Dropbox for plugins, fact types etc, I suspect the same would work for One Drive

Yes, as stated in that Knowledge Base article it works for OneDrive and I use it.

Whether you use that or the Export / Import commands depends on how often you use Tools > Fact Types > New.
If only very infrequently used, then Export / Import is somewhat simpler.

Fabulous! I've downloaded this software onto both computers and done the necessary - it now works perfectly.
Thank you! :) :) :)
