Problem with Backup

Post by Con » 26 Apr 2019 17:08

For years I have always closed with a full backup but suddenly today the backup is stopping short suggesting that 15 files are not backed up. This is happening with both the projects folder on the desktop PC and the external drive where I keep a second copy. What could I be doing wrong here?

First a little housekeeping please.
Click your username Con top right and choose User Control Panel.
Then on its Profile tab, select Family Historian V6.2 (or whatever version you have) and scroll down to Submit.
Then it will appear to the right of your postings, and we will know which version of FH you are using, so give the best advice.

The most common reason for FH not backing up files is due to them being in use by another program.
Check that none of the files in the Project folder are open in an editor such as a word-processor or image editor.
Another possibility is that recently created files in the Project are being scanned by your anti-virus product, or being auto-backed-up by another tool, or being saved to cloud storage.
Have you changed any such tools recently that might be the culprit?

However, FH V6.2 does identify such issues with a clear message, so maybe you have an earlier version?

Many thanks Mike, Housekeeping duties (online at least!) completed. Your advice helped me to both consider and to rule out some possibilities. I think I have resolved the problem but I will reply to your suggestions in case I do have to trouble you again. For several hours I blundered a search through my whole project and did find that somehow I had acquired two separate lists of backups within my Windows10 FH folder and that some backups were duplicated. This also applied to my external updates too. I worked my way cautiously through them all then found that I could complete the backup successfully and repeat it several times, learning along the way.

I do not use any kind of editor programme or Cloud storage, keeping everything simple, and had checked my ESET virus for any signs of interference. A possible connection might be that I had previously received a couple of messages about low system storage which my local PC doctor is going to check next week. Hopefully I now know the cause.

Thank you again.

I am glad you resolved your problem, although it is not clear to me exactly what the cause was.
