Migrating V6.2 from old to new pc

Post by chstevenson » 09 Apr 2019 15:21

Both PCs are windows 10 and have identical versions of FH installed. I have followed the steps in the Knowledge Base but have fallen at the first hurdle and it is recommended to ask advice here. I have checked previous posts but my exact problem does not seem to have been addressed recently.

On the old PC my FH folders are on the C drive but most of my media are on the B drive in a 'TMG Exhibits' folder with subfolders for each project (Ancestors, Cavie, Monnington) within which are more subfolders such as Census with subfolders 1841, 1851 etc. This originates from when I first used TMG 20 years or so ago. So when I look at the external links list this file structure on the B drive appears first, there are a couple of odd (unimportant) items on the C drive and then some but I do not think all the media appear in the Project Data Folder - Media. The new PC has C drive (500GB SSD) where FH is installed and I also have B drive (500GB SSD) and D drive (1TB HDD). I had planned to reserve the C drive for apps and the B drive for documents and other data with photos (except for family history photos) and music on D drive but it seems that it may be better to keep the media for Family Historian within the app on the same drive. Your advice on getting on all the media into the project data folder would be appreciated. I had planned to move the projects over by doing a full backup and restoring from an external drive following the migration guide, again advice appreciated. I see this as an opportunity to get an optimal set up of Family Historian on the new pc.

Yes, Media files outside the FH Project folder are difficult to migrate to another PC.
If the B: drive TMG Exhibits links you can see are not exactly replicated on the new PC then FH cannot find those files.

BTW: FH Full Project Backups do NOT include Media files outside the Project folder.

So as you are suggesting, the Media files all need to be moved inside the appropriate Project's Media folder.
I assume Ancestors, Cavie & Monnington are three of your Projects as listed in the Project Window.
Before following the instructions below, ensure you have file backups of your Media files.

The C:\Users\...\Documents\Family Historian Projects\Ancestors\Ancstors.fh_data\Media\ folder should eventually hold all the Media files for that Project.
So you need to Move (not Copy) the files within the B:\...\TMG Exhibits\Ancestors\ folder to the folder above using Windows File Explorer. You can retain any sub-folder structure that exists.
Then in FH use Tools > External File Links and click the Auto Repair Links button.
That should search for and find all the moved Media files.

Repeat the above process for all other external Media files for each of your Projects.

Then the migration criteria in step 1) should be satisfied and you can move on to subsequent steps.
