Expressions in Customize Data Entry?

Post by Kim Travis »

"Customize Data Entry" is really useful. However, it would be even better if I could use an Expression to populate a field to be displayed, rather than just having to pick a single Data Reference. Is what I am trying to achieve possible already in some way I have not yet discovered?

Thanks very much,

Kim

Kim, I've moved this to the General Usage Forum as it is not to do with Plugins.

The Customize Data Entry feature is very restricted on what is supported.
Expressions are not allowed at all, and even Data References are severely restricted to just the current record.

Thanks Mike - nice to know I hadn't been missing something. I asked because I've only just discovered, that you can use an expression to select Rows in a Query!

Thanks for moving this - I always intended to put it in General Usage and must have failed,

Yes, in most features Expressions are supported wherever Data References are allowed.
See how_to:understanding_expressions|> Understanding Expressions.
But Customize Data Entry is the exception.

One place you can customise on the Property Box is the title, which can take expressions, so if it's a small bit of information you can add it up there.

The Property box is mainly designed for data entry and as such it only really allows fields which can be edited, with a couple of exceptions, which obviously expressions can not.

Putting an Expression into the Property Box Caption for Individuals works like a dream - thanks very much for the tip!
