Moving individuals between projects

Post by redvanman » 07 Mar 2019 11:46

I have come across a text document that contains detailed information about some of my ancestors from the late 18th century. It has considerable detail (births, baptisms, marriages, etc), but no details of sources, other than a general statement that most of it came from parish and census records.
My plan is to create a new project containing all these newly discovered people, and work through them verifying the information where I can, adding detailed sources and my assessment of the veracity of the data .
Now my question: Once I'm happy with the information for one individual, can I transfer it to my main project? I'm aware that I could merge the whole lot in one go, but can I do it one person at a time?
Thanks
Alyn

No, that is not as easy as it sounds.
The main problem is that you are not just migrating an Individual record, but all the records linked to it such as Family records defining parents, spouses, and children, plus Source Citations and Repositories, linked Media records and files, shared Note records, etc...

So I would advise one of these strategies.
  1. Wait until your separate Project is complete and then use the File > Merge/Compare File tool to migrate it all into your master Project.
  2. Work in your master Project with an unrelated sub-tree, and then you can possibly migrate ratified individuals into your master tree, but they will have to be unlinked from their Family in the tentative sub-tree and linked to their relatives in the master tree.
  3. Work in your master Project with those unratified individuals in a Named List or use one of the other Work In Progress techniques, but otherwise they are linked to their relatives in your master tree. If you feel it necessary to keep an existing ratified individual separate from their tentative counterpart, then use two Individual records, which can later be merged via Edit > Merge/Compare Records, but beware of managing Family links appropriately.

Thanks Mike,
That's useful advice. I've opted for an unlinked tree, but I will probably use a named list as well, to help me find those unlinked individuals who share names with people in my main tree.

If you are will have potentially duplicate Individuals, then once ratified you will need to use Edit > Merge/Compare Records to combine the master and subtree duplicated Individuals.

Another way to find duplicates is the Find Duplicate Individuals Plugin.
