Hi all,
I am trying to make a standard direct ancestors (going from the top to the bottom) tree preferably couples but without any family attached. Using a plugin I have managed to do it but with all the family attached but that is not what I want. Can anyone help please.

Have you tried the standard Ancestor tree? (First of the four diagram icons in the main toolbar)?
If you only want one particular line you can close off the othes by clicking on the relevant expansion button (small circle just above an ancestor's box). If the expansion buttons are not showing, click the icon with the small red cross inside a circle, in the toolbar.

Jan, what Plugin were you trying to use?
By Ancestors tree do you mean 1) a Diagram or 2) a sub-tree Project/GEDCOM?
1) As Lorna says, to get an Ancestor Diagram, select the root person and choose the Ancestor Diagram icon in toolbar, or use View > Standard Diagram Types > Ancestors.
2) If you are trying to create a sub-tree Project, then from the Ancestor Diagram above, apply the technique explained in how_to:create_an_export_gedcom_based_on_a_diagram|> Create an export Gedcom based on a diagram.

The problem I'm getting is that I don't want the brothers and sisters to appear on the chart.

I have managed to do it. You work from the bottom up not from the top down, and close off the lines you don't want. Not sure why it works that way and not the other, but it works.
Thanks for your help

Jan, I don't understand why you were getting brothers & sisters at all.
An Ancestor Diagram does not ever show brothers & sisters.
Were you perhaps using one of the other types of Diagram by mistake?
You should not need to close off any lines, except to hide ancestral branches, and certainly not to hide siblings.
Perhaps you can attach a screenshot of the problem you faced.
See the advice in info:forums#posting_topics|> Posting Topics about attaching screenshots.

Jan, that is NOT an Ancestor Diagram because those are Descendant boxes.
Ancestor boxes have a green background, whereas Descendant boxes are pale yellow.
That is why you are having problems - we keep advising you to use an Ancestor Diagram - why have you not tried that?
It is the left-hand one of the four toolbar diagram icons.

Jan another option if you are trying to simply show a direct line from one person to another is to select the Tools>How related select the two people then select the diagram option and then the default option.
